So, I have an extra GVR4 6-bolt tranny laying around with no real purpose right now. However, back home I have a 96 TSi AWD with a fresh 7-bolt out of a rolled 99 GST (the motor has 33k on it.) The tranny, however, is going and the center diff is virtually gone. Under any boost I do nothing but spin the rears and lots of metallic banging coming from the tranny.

Any way I could bolt this tranny up to the motor in a 2g chassis or is it just not worth it?

Are they both manual?

I would say I am pretty sure you can do that, considering that you can put a 2G trans on a 1G motor.

Yes, both are manuals. The GVR4 tranny is in excellent condition too, so I was hoping this could be possible. I tried searching the fact, but it wasn't readily available. And yea, I put the stock 93 7bolt on my 6 bolt tranny with the little adapter gasket-thing and it was fine. Was hoping this was the same situation as I couldn't find a definitive answer through searching and wanted to do this.

From what I understand 4G63 is 4G63 no matter what platform is may be in...they should all adapt with either slight modification or just bolt right on. Just think of it as simple as a 1G trans on a 2G motor. If you try searching in that matter I am sure you can find something.

You can't put a 1g transmission in a 2g, the front mount is in a different location. On a 1g it's on the block, which is why you can use a 2g transmission. On a 2g the mount is on the transmission, if you use a 1g transmission, there would be no mount in the front.

What about pulling the internals from the good 1g tranny and trying to put them into the 2g transmission? ANyone ever had any success with that?

It looks like with a bit of fabrication it could work...

I feel sorry for the next owner of the car, why butcher the frame of a car just to install a transmission that shouldn't be there in the first place.
