How do I tell if I have a 6 bolt or a 7 bolt?
Will x part from a 6 bolt fit a 7 bolt?
Will x part from a 7 bolt fit a 6 bolt?
Which one is better?
How do I swap my x bolt for an x bolt?

What is the difference between 6-bolt and 7-bolt engines (aside from the obvious - 6 vs. 7 bolts connecting the flywheel :p )

Is there an advantage over either of the two engines?

Thanks,

-Mike

since people use the 1g big rods on 2g 7 bolt motors i figure it would be interchangable, but i still figure i should ask before i buy some crower rods off a 2g guy since i have a 1g. thanks

I was at Advance Auto today inquiring about crankshaft kits (to save me the time from getting my own machined) and for my 94 block, they listed two different kits. The one was a 7-bolt and then a 6-bolt flange was listed.

That's the link to the part itself, but it doesn't give a description. So is this a 7-bolt crankshaft with a 6-bolt "end" on it or do you suspect that it's a bad listing? I checked for my original year (which should be a 6-bolt) and it listed the same product under that year as well.

EDIT: I thought I'd include the two descriptions to save people the time on selecting cars, etc.

This will answer your question:
What is a 6-bolt engine?
What is a 7-bolt engine?
A 6-bolt engine is one that has a 6-bolt flywheel - that is, there are 6 bolts holding the flywheel to the crankshaft. A 7-bolt motor has 7 bolts there.

Along with the flywheel change, there are many other internal changes between the two engines. The crankshafts are different sizes, as are the rods and crankshaft seals. 6-bolt motors have 'big' rods, while 7-bolt engines have 'small' rods. The journal and bearing widths different, although the bearing diameters are the same.

There may also be other changes between the two engines, and the parts are not interchangeable.

Use the correct crank for the year of engine. No offense but sell the 7-bolt and start over. Your car is 91 and the 6-bolt is better to start with.

I know the difference between them. I'm just wondering whether they're pretty much selling a 7-bolt crank with a 6-bolt end on it. Cause that'd save me some money (wouldn't need to get a 7-bolt AWD flywheel ;))

And getting a 6-bolt isn't an option at the time, and I can't save my block for my 6-bolt, unless you'd recommend welding a block.

I dont know the exact manufactured date so how do i tell if my 92 is 6bolt 4, or 6bolt 7 or something like that. Heck i dont know. hahaha. ANyone?

open driver's door and there should be sticker and if it's till april/may then you should have 6bolt if its after april/may its 7bolt.
hope that helps

yes i am looking to buy a used engine but it is so diffilcult to get a 95 one.... The 95 4G63T engine is a 6-bolt or 7-bolt?
Thanks

Yup its a 7 bolt. If you're keeping the car I would not put a 7 bolt back in it. If I remember correctly, there is a good FAQ on the VFAQ's for doing a 6bolt swap in a 2g.

on one, 6 bolts hold the flywheel on, the other has 7 of em holding it on! plus 6-bolts have lower compression, better flowing heads and intake manis and throttlebodies. that's all i gotta say for now, sumone else will pick up where i left off im sure

I got a question to add to that.

I have a '92 wich has the early 7 bolt (no crankwalk) my question is do the 1g 6bolts still have better heads, manifolds, ect or are they the same? Because I know the 1g 7bolt have the same stock HP.

as far as the diff between 1gen motors it's the number of bolts and the smaller rods, but the compression is the same, and in late 93 I believe they switched to a smaller thottle body and smaller cam specs but that is all I can really think of right now.:D

my 7 bolt ate a valve and its toast. so i was wondering if i can use the same timing belt since mine is only about 10k old. im in the market for a 6 bolt as well if anyone knows where to get just a block or a built motor or something along those lines let me know.

thanx for the space

yeah im pretty sure they are the same...

one way to find out is to go online and look at a dsm shop if there is a 6 bolt/7 bolt option the parts are probably different if not they are probably the same :)

i think the main difference is the crank setup is different. like the size of the bearings and what not. alot of people say its better to run 6 bolts but the conversion seems like a pain in the azz. i like my 7 bolt just fine. i still smoke em"
