What's up all, super newbie here so let's go easy on me. I have done some research but I'm looking to buy a 2g with a 6 bolt swap.

From what I've seen for sale any asked certain sellers, a lot of them have CEL on, mostly for a misfire. I live in the "great" state of Virginia where it can be a pain in the *** to get cars inspected and pass emissions.
I am wondering how hard a fix it would be the misfire code? I've seen some posts that talk about installing a potentiometer but haven't been able to find it on the magnus motor sports website anymore--the link doesn't work in the thread.
I've also read about changing the CAS from a green top to black top? This is the Cam Angle Sensor correct?

What is the most common and most effective fix for this issue?

Also any other quick buying tips would be great, I have minimal wrenching abilities and this is my first foray into DSMs
Thanks

Quick tip: nothing wrong with a 7-bolt. Especially the later model split-thrust blocks.

I would personally prefer to do a swap myself as I would ensure it was done correctly. If it were me, and I am forced to use a 6-bolt, I would look at a 6-bolt block and 2g head (I did this on my first DSM). The Kiggly 6-bolt crank sensor is the way to go. It is plug-n-play on the 2g, and allows the use of the 2g cam sensor as well. This would eliminate the misfire issues you have read about.

Thanks for the help 2gm, which are the split thrust blocks? The 97-99? Do they not get the "crank walk" issue?

Any engine can have excessive crankshaft movement due to a worn thrust bearing. This is unfortunately a sore subject in the DSM community. In sum, it is not all that common and would likely just look up the symptoms and check for play when purchasing a car. At this age, a car that was prone to CW would have likely already had a failure as the average mileage of a used 2g DSM increases.

The best solution would be to get ECMlink. I may have the information on the potentiometer. Would have to search. let me know if you still need it

Sorry but other than tuning, what does the ecmlink let me do? Does it allow you to control what codes show up? I know o2 sensors are always giving CEL which would cause the car to fail
