So, im getting a 6 bolt block from my stepfathers friend who wants it gone, for my new project tsi awd. Im looking to go with the the 20 over wesico piston and either 1g rods rebuilt or some eagles. I called a local machine shop about hot tanking, new freeze plugs, boring and honing, and taking off a little to flatten the deck, he said somewhere around 400-450 to do all that. Is that pretty reasonable, what other things should i look for or do while i rebuild the engine, goal is 4-500 reliable one day, first after the rebuild, i will be on my break in evo 3, so probably i want 350. What do you guys think, what else should i ask to do or do while hes in there fixing it up?

If the $450-$500 just includes the hot tank, freeze plugs, boring, and decking that is WAYYY too high.
Just to give you an idea....I just had my 6 bolt block honed (didn't need to be bored), hot tanked, new freeze plugs, decked, and also had my crank balanced and polished all for $120.

WOW. I thought $450 was cheap. About the SEC, how are there prices? They do look good, through their website.

I paid 640 for honing, boring, deck milling, ultrasonic clean, crank polish, a full head job and some small stuff like stud repair and such. This was all done by a guy who builds 50000 dollar porsche engines. I thought it was a good deal.

Well $640 was a good price if it was for both the head and block. As for the block, Is he assembling the shortblock for you too? If he's boring .020 over, installing, balancing, and assembling then I think it's a pretty reasonable price.

For the 450, he is not assembling for me, however, the way he talked it wouldn't be expensive. But i wanted to do it anyway to learn.

Just to update this, he only charged me $271 for everything. So he quoted me high big time.
