Couple of questions on base timing for a 6 bolt in a 97 GSX. I set the base timing to 5 degrees btdc but the car is still idling a little weird. Fluxuates between 1000 and 1400 rpms. Also when setting the base timing if I am at 10 degrees btdc and i move it more towards 5 degrees btdc the car starts to want to die, if I move it out more to 15btdc it seems to idle better. Throttle also takes a second to respond if I give it a little bit of gas while at 5btdc.

I have a 95 ecu with dsmlink, and the invert cas is selected.

Is it possible I inverted the CAS accidentally when I put it in the engine?So the cas is inverted on the engine side and through dsmlink making it 180 degrees out. Instead of just one or the other.

Can I uncheck invert CAS in dsmlink and then turn on the car or will it ruin the engine? Also is it possible to set timing with the CAS installed incorrectly, or would it not even work?
 
Thats because you are to have 5BTDC at idle 750RPMS..... At 1000-1500 rpms the timing should be around 10-15 otherwise it will die. :D
 
Inverting the CAS refers the the electrical signal.

If you put the CAS in 180 degrees off then you should turn the engine over by hand until the timing marks line up and then pull the CAS, align it's timing marks and reinstall it.

I don't know if the 97's have a timing adjust connector or if DSMLink allows you to set the mode like you would with the Mitsubishi scan tool. The ECU however needs to be in the set timing mode or you can't adjust the CAS correctly.

So I guess my problem is its not idling at 750, dsmlink is set to 750 and i was grounding the timing when i did it. When I grounded the timing it went from 1400rpms to 1000rpms. What could be causing it to not go to 750rpms at idle? ISC? Vaccum Leak? I apologize i didnt mean invert cas, I meant the peice of the cas that you can rotate and has to be set a certain way at tdc. If that was backwards would it cause the problem?
 
You need to adjust the BISS. If the BISS is too far out of adjustment, the ISC cannot adjust the idle to 750 rpms.
 
I did look up the ISC already and read about the FIAV block off plate which I am highly considering doing. I made a boost leak tester but I am waiting for the silicon around the tire stem valve to dry. Once it has dried I am going to do a boost leak test first then go from there. I have a 6 bolt in my 97 gsx, I thought 6bolts didnt have a BISS?
 
You can ground the timing with dsmlink. And no the 2gb's don't have the ground connector under the hood.
 
Yes i did ground the timing with dsmlink, I set it to as close to 5btdc as i could do to the idle surging. I just dont want to drive the car until it is idling correctly and im sure it is at 5btdc.
 
I set my car to 5 but maybe at 1000.It don't die. I have crower stage 3 cams. It idles pretty steady at 1000 .You have to set idle with biss and ground idle out to think reset the isc pintle. My car never stalls .I idle it at 1000 though don't like cam noises and extra shake.
So not sure what that stuff about 10 to 15 btdc is about.

The higher the RPM, the more the ECU advances the timing. So if you're idling higher the timing will increase, hence the need to check timing at 750rpm
 
Ok but if the timing is grounded doesnt that stop the ecu from advancing it?
