i read something before i dont know if it was this forum or not but someone was talking about extending their 5th gear or soemthing to make their car more fuel efficient on the highway. i drive about an hour a day (half hour there and back) on the highway speed limit is 100 but when u gotta drive that far everyday sometimes u just wanna get there a bit faster if u know what i mean. anyone know how to do this? what it costs? how much work it is etc...
im doing my 6bolt swap soon so that would probly be a good time to look into this. its a 2g awd.

thank you.

It's not a 5th gear extension.

When people they wanna stretch 5th gear, they mean replacing the Stock 5th gear with one out of an evo3. It ends up allowing you to cruise at a lower RPM. Which helps fuel effeciency. Usually it's done when the transmission gets rebuilt and upgraded. They also look for taller 1st and 2nd gears as well.
Like TRE or Shep.

Look at TRE and look through their stuff.

If you are seriously wanting to install this, you have to do it right. There are gaskets, pins, and bolts that you can't re-use. What you can do is get an exchanged trans if you don't have the time to rebuild.

Personally I'd talk to TRE and talk to them about it. They would know best.

i think jack has this too, might be wrong, but i was checking out his trannys couple days ago and it lists the taller gear. its worth it if you drive super fast all the time ;)

Yes you can use the 10% taller 5th gear that the evo has it will lower your RPMs 300 rpm so say you cruise at 3000 rpm you'll now cruise at 2700 rpm at the same speed. DO NOT TRY TO INSTALL THIS YOURSELF, these trannies are crazy complex and its worth it to have someone do it right. I've seen the guys at TRE tear down and build transmissions and they do the best job possible and leave no gear unchecked and leave nothing to chance. The last thing you want is to have a gear installed only to have it fail 3 months later because your synchronizers exploded.

I think you might look for an exchange. You tell him what you want in a trans and so forth. They build a trans and send it to you, and you send them your trans in exchange. It's easier to just swap trans than try to rebuild it yourself, or swapping gears.
