I am tearing apart my tranny and I cannot get the 5th gear assembly off. The vfaq says it should pull off put it doesn't. I cant get a puller in there, and I tried prying but I am afraid of chipping the teeth. any suggestions?

If you've already gotten the nuts off, then it will just take some force to pry it off. I had this same concern about mine, just pry it off. Although, I wouldn't recommend putting a prybar on the teeth, you need to get it further under the gear.

Use a lady slipper pry bar under the edge of the gear on both sides. and hit the end of the gear post with a brass hammer. works for me everytime.

Alright thanks for the prompt responses. I tried a bunch of different pry bars and none of them are thin enough to fit between the case and the gear. I tried prying the case up to force up the gears but no luck. I cant find a pry bar thin enough to fit. Or a gear puller thin enough. Could I special order a tool to do the job?

Thanks in advance.

Use some bp blaster let it sit for some time, i do over night; then hit the round piece around the center it's stuck because it has rust. Then try prying it slightly it'll come off...wasn't born there! In the end if all else fails you'll need to replace the gear..

I got it. I just ground the edges of my puller so they fit underneath the gear and it worked perfectly
