50trim or 57trim on stock i/c

Ok, I'm thinking of upgrading turbo & supporting mods. However, budget is limited and can only upgrade one step at a time. At this point, I want to upgrade turbo to 50trim or 57trim turbo and eventually have supporting mods. I currently have s16g, 660cc, 2.5" exhaust, AFC, f/p, installed. But I still have stock smic. I read somewhere that some people are running these turbos with stock smic and run ~12 sec 1/4 mile.

I like to hear from you if my current BPU mods with 50/57trim turbo upgrade will be reliable enough and still give descent power. My s16g turbine is now cracking and leaking exhaust gas from over 10+ years of service, so it needs to be replaced with new turbo and I might as well go for the ball-bearing turbo mods.

I considered EVO16G but "might as well" factor of upgrading "once" deal that we all preach. Plus, what are the difference between "E" "P" "V" "M" etc of compressor trims.
Is anyone trim conf better than other?

Your definately gonna want a front mount.
 
I would not run a stock SMIC on ANY turbo larger than a S16G, You say to do the one time right opinion!!- Wait- save your money for a good FMIC, or consider custom setups, you could run a Supra SMIC for $100- if you do the work, and find a good deal- those can handle quite a bit.
EVO 8 stock FMIC can be found are quite strong, you can find them for not too much more ( RRE sales them, sometimes..)
However, saving for a FMIC kit would be the ideal choice, you would never have to worry about heatsoaking again!
IMO- I would wait/save, and eventually get FMIC.
 
I agree the intercooler should definitely be the first step in the 50/57 trim equation. It will heatsoak quickly if your engine consumes the kind of flow those turbos can produce.

However, if your current turbine housing is cracking, maybe you could try checking the local salvage yards for a good used housing first, then maybe the s16G could last until you have the cash for the bigger turbo? Who knows, maybe you'd find a primo 14B to play with until you have the cash for the new turbo.

But anyways I really think the SMIC is not going to be effective with very much flow. Get a core and weld up the end tanks yourself if you can, or take to a machine shop and have them do it for you and it may be cheaper than buying a pre-fab kit. Should help you get the new turbo a little sooner.

Additionally, you'll need to upgrade the intercooler, but you're not strapped to a front mount if you want to maintain the sleeper look. The price of an SMIC that will handle a 50 trim variant is easily in FMIC cost range, but it's something to consider as an option. Additionally, you could buy a DejonTool sidemount and add water injection to aid in charge cooling. Info on the 50 trim SMIC's can be found here:

I like people who put few extra minutes to compose vs quickies. Shows mannerism and class. My goal is between 400-500awhp. Ahhh, the joys of options. Got to regress and rethink my options, but first I got to test for air leak, etc.

I wouldnt even want a side mount on an Evo 16g. Look at it this way, the Evo comes with a FMIC stock so obviously mitsubishi felt there was a need for it with the 16g turbo...
 
I have the s16g and i am running the buschur front mount. I could tell a difference when i upgraded to this intercooler (can't give you exact dyno numbers) but it runs great and keeps very cool (no heat soaking here) and I am in northern texas where it gets real hot. I do notice that after 5-6 runs back to back at the track that it gets a little warm but nothing that can't be fixed with a little time to cool down. I am also thinking about going 57 trim or the 60-1 here soon and the intercooler will run just fine with it. Just trying to give you where i started. Definatley go with the intercooler first.
 
I would go with the 50 trim so that you could save a little money to help with that front mount. As far as the side mount taking the turbo....if you keep the boost extremely low, it will work until you get the front mount. The 50 trim will also reach your goals. Good luck!:thumb:

You're welcome! I think the right combination and a great tune will put you there. The intercooler issue is entirely up to you. I would think that an FMIC would be the best option, but again, if you wanted to go sleeper, a large SMIC and methanol injection will also work. For cost factor alone, the FMIC is hands down the better choice, but really either will suffice and it's about what you want from the motor and your goals.

Yea but there are aftermarket sidemounts that flow just as much. It just for the sleepers that dont wanna have a huge fmic, so it looks less mean and more stock.

I don't feel the same way. I am running a ported/clipped B16G at 25 pounds on a supra smic and water injection and my intake temps never get above 90 degrees. There is no way that you would be able to do that on a stock smic though. You definately need something that is going to cool the charged air down more than the stocker will.
