There's not really nothing weong with water-cooled; it's just not needed.

When Porsche & Mitsubishi, both of which are HEAVILY, HEAVILY involved in Motorsport, stop producing watercooled turbos as standard equipment on their "Performance" cars, then I'll be convinced. Show me which non-watercooled turbo they use and I will switch to it because I KNOW that I can trust them, not some schlock DSM turbo vendor who stole a turbo designed for a Diesel engine and slapped it onto a passenger car.

I have to side with pboglio on this one. Simply because of the short time I've been involved with DSM's, I've heard of more failed low mileage Garretts, then I have tried and true Mitsubishis. The 16G was designed for a car, it was made for a high performance gasoline 2.0L in mind - it is oil and water cooled. The Garrett bastard/frankenstein creations have no OEM reference point, other then on diesel engines that have other means to keep their oil cool. Besides, the big rigs/tractors/etc that they orginated on don't have the same usage cycle mainly because they aren't shut off very often - but are designed to idle just about all the time.

The only reason DSM Venders of late have been offering oil only CHRA is because they are CHEAPER, not because they are better. Do they work? Yes. Can they make high HP numbers? Yes.

Will it put a higher thermal load on your oil? YES. The heat in the CHRA must be removed or its toast. All that heat is transfered into your oil pan where it is picked up and run through the remainder of the engine. This could be of little concern or could be disastrous.

If all you do is some street raceing or a day at the drags: little concern. There is probably enough recovery (or down) time for it not to be much of an issue.

On the other hand, if you are doing open track events (which I do a couple of times a year) at your local road course: disaster! Looking at my pocket logger I'm at full throttle about 85% of the time in a 30 minute session. As it is my oil temp is way up and oil pressure low at the end of the session. I could just imagon what would happen with that added oil temp form an oil only CHRA. And before you ask, yes my 90 came with an external oil cooler.

I'm just trying to help my fellow DSM'ers. Just look at the whole picture (uses, goals, etc.) before you buy and plan accordingly. I like to think as a group we are better than some of the other communities and we think before we do things. That when someone says "oil only CHRA's are new and water coLOLed CHRA's are old technology" you question it. You go and research the web for an answer and not accept heresay as gospel.
