4G63 Rebuild

So I bought my first dsm (1993 Talon ES) a couple of months ago and love this car. Aside from finding parts (oem springs for example) this has been a joy to own. My 15yr old daughter has her eye on it for when she turns 16... not gonna happen! Its mine and it's a 5 speed, . However I have found another 1993 automatic car that needs an engine, as well as a buddy that has a 4g63 with high miles I can rebuild. My question is how expensive of a project will this be and is it worth my time and money? Will I be able to find parts? I hope you guys can help, thanks!

First off I can safely say that you will never get out what you put in. So we do it for the love of going fast in a DSM! It can be expensive it depends on what are your overall goals. Dependable, Fast or Cheap. As it has been mentioned to me more than once, You can pick any two of the three to choose. Dependable/Reliable and fast is probably the most expensive and time consuming of the choices, but you get what you pay for. You can do the majority of the work yourself. Bottom end and Head work I would leave to the professionals. I recommend doing as much research on DSM tuners and other sources before you take on the project. There is a good market for parts and mods. If you are patient you can find deals and beware of the crap out here too. Is either of the cars mentioned turbo? I was under the impression that the ES trim was N/A.

Both cars are no-turbo, however I do have a stock intercooler, pipes, injectors and bov in case I wanted to buy the turbo manifold and make mine a turbo fwd 5 speed. I thought that might be fun eventually. The one I would build though is just to be a daily driver for a teenage girl so "dependable" is what I would try for. The motor I have is at 140k and was running when pulled out of a wrecked car that was junked. I may pull the top off and reman the head, water pump, timing belt, thermostat... not sure what else is best when doing a swap so im open to suggestions. Keep in mind that the motor is out of the car so its easier to make changes before I drop it in. Thanks

it mostly depends on how far you have to go into the rebuild. A small rebuild kit can be purchased for about $400 but it depends if you need new rods, if the cylinder head is in good shape. I rebuilt my motor, a turbo, and it cost me almost $700. Of course i needed new rods, pistons and replaced all my valves, springs and retainers. Be sure you look into getting a new oil pump, water pump, battery, alternator, and make sure it has a good transmission.
