4g63 cold air intake done right !!!!

Logged my car last night, 58 degs ambient temps, intake temps hovered around65-67 degs throughout the pull. During idle it never went above 80 degs, and quickly dropped back lower once the car started moving again. Id say this is an improvement over regular intake set up.

Also i almost finished making my sheetmetal water splash shield will post pics of it when photobucket gets thru with their server maintaince or whatever... I Was actually caught in a downpoor on the high way not too long after I finished making it. No hydrolocking here!!!

To add to this, two days ago I got some more patio screen and put it over the air dam pocket on the front bumper directly in front of the filter.( My last pic in the above post shows the empty pocket which is were i placed the patio screen snuggly in front of and used nails thru the bumper to keep it in place. You cant see any of the nails btw.)

I did two layers of it and its pretty thick. Water hitting thatw ill be so chopped up that by the time it hits the filter it wont be significant.

Luckily i did that because yesterday i had to drive 20-30 minutes in torrential down pours.
I drove slow but the roads were so flooded that i was in a foot of water it seemed and puddles were inevitable. I thought i was going to hydrolock my motor for sure.

But after all of that, i was still good.
The shielding that i had put, ( refer to pics above this post)
behind, underneathe and in front of the cold air intake in the fender did there job.
There was minimum water on the filter and pvc pipe, though they were wet due to the type of water i had to drive thru, im almost positive that most of the water that got on it came from the top ( engine bay, headlight area.)

You could also throw a shirt or a towel in there right in front of the filter also to help block/ and soak up any water that wouldve been hitting the filter. Im going to keep an extra old shirt or towel in the car for that also in case it rains.


If your doing a cold air intake, please take the time to properly protect it from the rain like i did.
That is your engine on the line...
 
But consider how much piping water would have to travel through to get to a gm-mas in blowthru configuration, it still just don't seem like that big of a worry.

I have personally killed 2 3" gm's with a cold air intake on my 1g. Cold air intake with a 3"gm is a no no on dsm.
 
I have had two DSMs with cold air intakes and GM MAF's and haven't had a single problem.

The only problem I had is when i literally drove home through what seams like a monsoon for about 1.5hrs and my maf was acting up and thinking there was about 4times the airflow that there actually was because the water molecules were cooling down the hot wires. I took it off and dried it out along with most of my pipes and it was good to go.

I have a true cold air on my 2g now with a GM maf and haven't had a single problem. You just have to avoid large puddles and put the filter in a good place.

Apex yours looks great! Seems like it sits pretty low though. Glad I could help a few out.

I just recently installed an Evo Mas in the same position with no problems at all. The Evo mas is shorter but I didn't need to change anything.

it looks lower in the picture for some reason but its not that bad, come winter i will just make it shorter with maybe a 45deg so its not all the way out of the engine bay

does the Evo MAS just swap right over for a 2g one?

any tuning required after? (i have DSMlink so its not much of a matter if it does though LOL)

Well, you need a 4" to 3" coupler to fit from the mas to the intake pipe which you can see in the picture. The 2g one is just a straight 4" to 4".

The only adjustments you have to make is with the airflow sliders and those adjustments you can find on the dsmlink forums and on their wiki. I have a 2.4L and I put in the airflow adjustments and started up and purred without a problem. I had a 2g mas before and it just so happened the the wiring was the same from the 2g and the evo to the 1g harness.

Hey everyone, I've been watching the progression of this thread, and I have to say you guys are doing a nice job. I have seen variations of this over the years on 1G cars for the street, but there are risks with water and dirt, especially when conditions deteriorate or the car is used for rally X or the like. So mostly as food for thought, here's my intake.
1. 3" NACA duct -- $20 off Ebay
2. Air Filter with a 6" outside diameter and whatever size you need for your piping.
3. piece of 6" ducting pipe from your favorite home improvement shop.
4. Duct cap 6" also from home improvement shop.
5. Place NACA duct in hood and line everything up. This is an involved step. If there is interest I can show what is involved, but for simplicity sake and not to hijack this thread I'll leave it for now.

I see the lowest air temperatures from the hood intake because it is up off the road. Plus you can submerge the front of the car to the headlights before there is any risk of water ingestion. I know not everyone wants to cut a hole in the hood, but felt it was worth showing this as an option.

I noticed most...if not all...of you guys are making CAI for using a 2g maf. Anyone done anything for the guys using a gm maf? I made an intake for a friend of mine that puts the filter in the SMIC location, and also gives you lots more room in the engine bay:

i know this thread is old, but i did mine, keeping the K&N FIPK. WORKS GREAT! Being the end of summer in texas OUTSIDE temps where over 100 degs, so with the filter in the OEM location, i was always fighting intake temps... now, intake temps in link MATCH outside air temp. Even while sitting at a red light... AWESOME! :hellyeah:

people have been asking me what all was needed for my CAI, so here is a picture of the needed parts to make your DSM as "HAPPY" about intake temps as mine now is while still using the K&N FIPK! Happy Boosting! :hellyeah:

This looks like it would let water in quite easily. Does it? Have you driven it in rain?

Addressing everyone else: Has anyone done this CAI mod with a stock 2g smic? Will it drastically decrease the efficiency of the smic? I want my car to be sleeper as possible. I know I know, but CAN it be done??? Because If so, I will be doing it. I also plan on moving the windshield wipers and modding them to make them spray water on my smic eventually. All responses welcome, but try to use logic only. Not "I think" please and thank you.
 
I have a 4" setup similar to this, Ive driven the car in the rain many many times without an issue. Just dont go flying through huge puddles, LOL.

Well I finally got around to finishing my cai system and here it is. I decided to go with the air duct style cai system. I grabbed a spectre 3" flexible air duct from pepboys and routed it from the inside bumper to the air filter. For my cold air box, I got this idea from a vid on youtube from username afredoa86. I dont like the way my plexiglass cover came out and might do it again. But overall the gains were good. Better throttle response, obviously lower temps aka lowered some knock (dont know how many temps I dropped), my 16g spools sooner, and possibly gain 1 or 2mpg.



Here is my cold air box. It started as a heat shield from turbo garage (piece of crap but it works). I then attached a plexiglass cover. I was pretty disapointed in the way it came out. I'm prob gonna redo it. The main problem I had attaching the cover was that the plexiglass doesnt bend so well and I was having trouble keeping it held down.




Here it is from the front. If I could go back, I would've used a 4" duct. But the pepboys air duct looks pretty flush and gives a stealth look. The untrained eye wouldnt even notice this.

Awesome thread! I do plan on doing this (it'll be a winter project) and here's my idea. 2G stock intercooler comes with a pretty dandy scoop which lines up perfectly with the front bumper. I plan on punching out the intercooler core, sealing the bottom inlet and directing all the airflow upwards (obviously enlarging the top side and mating it to surface just under the filter)
Create a shrouding (filter box) out of some heat repellent insulation and VOILA!
It'll look clean, should (in theory) be effective, and it'll eat up some time!

Just sharing for now, I'll be sure to post picture of my progress once I get this project underway.
 
I'm working on a similar setup except going with a stock Clean Look. The stock Air Box, Connected to a 4" MAF Adaptor, connected to a 4" Hard/Flexible Rubber "coupler" thats around the MAF Length, It folds from 4" Round to 4" Oval and connected to a 2g Injen Intake Pipe. No shitty MAFT for me, MAP All The way!

Just waiting to find a Stock Intake Box. Intake Box finds itself in the same location your all mounting your filter, but I don't have to worry about soaking the filter in water. Thinking about getting some 3" Flex hose and making a "Ram Air" thing to connect to the bumper... and poking holes in the Flex hose for Water Drain. That way Cold air is directed to the intake and if we happen to have a flood of some sort, Water will drain out of the hose. Unless Water is 2ft deep which is above the air Box. Then screwed is the word!
 
I realize this is an old thread, but I've just made an extension to my short ram intake to re route the filter into the stock smic location. I'll attach a picture. I was wondering if the same results could be had by shielding the filter in the stock location, along with adding duct work to route air from the front bumper, up to the filter in the blocked off stocklocation? My main concern is water reaching the filter if I use my current extension, as well as hacking up my car by cutting a hole to allow the extension to go through.

Shielding the stock location and routing a duct through the stock IC pipe hole seems to be a good compromise, but I would like the full benefits of a true cold air style intake.
