I have recently installed Megasquirt on my 420A in my MG Midget. I have an MSD 6AL, given to me by my father-in-law, which I'd like to install in the car, connect to Megasquirt, and use the 6AL to drive the spark, to get the benfits of multiple sparks, at least at the lower rpms. I have been told, however, by someone apparently smarter than I, that I can't use a 6AL with the 420A coil, even the MSD 420A coil. This is due to the fact that the 420A coil is really a set of 2 coils, each sparking 2cylinders. I was told I'd need 2 MSD boxes, one for each side of the coil, so 1 for each 2 cylinders. I have not seen anything in the MS, nor the MSD, literature that says this or even alludes to this. Can someone confirm of refute this or provide some guidance on 420A MS and MSD 6AL?

So from what I read on that MSD is it's like a wasted spark set-up. Correct? Fires the coil twice per cycle. Your megasquirt should be set up like that already. I see no need to add the MSD when the megasquirt can/does do that.

How do you currently have it set-up in tunerstudio?

Well, I have no background/information of the MSD 6AL. But, yes it is basically a two coil set-up with one coil firing 1 and 3 and the other coil firing 2 and 4.

But do I understand correctly that you want to put wasted spark on a wasted spark system? Or are you trying to somehow do sequential? Just a little confused.

I am not trying to change the spark set-up at all, per se, just trying to find out if I can use my 6AL with Megasquirt on my 420A. I want to interface the MS and the 6AL, because I have them. I have been told no, I'd need two MSD 6 boxes to use MSD with Megasquirt on my 420A, one for each side of the coil, one MSD box for each two cylinders, but I have seen info in the Megamanual that says you can use a 6AL with Megasquirt, see: MSD 6A Ignition Control. This link does not specifically address the 420A though, hence why I am unsure if you actually can. I am also not an electronics specialist, so if the answer/instructions are not basic, in black and white, then it might as well be Chinese. The car runs fine as is, but I want to use the MSD box that is otherwise just sitting in the garage collecting dust.

The MSD isn't going to add anything but complexity. Your megasquirt is already doing what that box will do... That is wasted spark.
