hey everyone i was wondering if someone could give me step for step instructions on how to remove my a/c i dont ever use it and it kinda stinks anyways so i just want to take it out i searched the sight and just cant find what im looking for any help would be great thank you.

I dont think there is a How To on it. Its pretty straight forward though. If you want to do it the "legal" way have a shop vacuum the sytem. It shouldnt cost much. It will also keep the mess down when you remove the lines. HVAC is pretty high pressure stuff.

After the system is drained...

1. Remove the belt. You will have to find a shorter one as I believe the 420s use the a/c belt to run another accessory cant be sure its been awhile.

2. Remove the four bolts from the compressor mounting bracket.

3. Follow the two lines High side and Low side and unbolt them from the accumulator. There should be some lines running to the Accumulator. Its directly in front of the radiator.

4. If your afraid of messing something up just dont undo anything that doesnt start at the compressor. I think that about covers it. Your lines compressor accumulator and filter drier should be everything under the hood if I missed something chime in. This stuff comes easy to me so sometimes I overlook things in my head when Im trying to explain

thanks for the help only if we lived close to each other LOL :p

It is a lot easier to get to and access if you remove you PS aswell, although that is a different story. Pretty much just jack the car up and lossen the bolts holding it to the engine along with the hoses. Remember, that is just the compressor, you have hoses running throughout the enigne bay that are all related to the A/C. I'd make sure to check your haynes manual if you want to go through and remove all of them.

yeah true i wish some one had some pics cause i have no clue what this stuff looks like LOL i feel dumb :ohdamn:

very simple.. but you will have to eliminate your power steering as well. one belt drives the ac and ps. just unbolt the hoses that come off of the ac compressor. make sure you wear something to protect your eyes. the compressor will blow out liquid but its not bad at all. then unbolt the 4 bolts that connect the compressor to the ac bracket, then unbolt the ac bracket from the block. very very simple. just get in there and identify what we are talking about.

:nono: This is untrue. You can retain the powersteering just buy a different sized belt. I used to have the part number somewhere. As for the lines follow them from the compressor to each piece of the A/C as stated above.

when i get around to it, i'll go to the shed and take a picture of the PS pump and bracket along with the A/C Compressor. If you want i can post my engine bay pic aswell, I think teh engine bay looks so much cleaner without the ac and PS, but once again you have to decide on the PS, its not neccasary, but like i said earlier, makes it easier to take out the A/c.

im surprised that they dont make an ac delete pulley for the 420a i know that they make it for alot of other various makes and models so that might also be something to check into, if you wanna stick with the factory belt size

thanks i would really appreciate that it would help me out a great deal thanks:thumb:

Here is the Power Steering Pump and bracket, you will need to move your coolant reservoir to get to it., i just set it on my headers while i worked, relatively easy to get off, except that hose i had a hard time with, DO NOT cut that hose unless you plan on never using power steering again, that hose is expensive.

And lastly here is all the space you will have if you remove both (left of the headers, all the open space)

wow (fotowntalon) now that is what i call descriptive LOL thanks a bunch thats was a big help ummm is there anything i should expect when i do this? its it hard to do the belt? what bo i do with the belt? thanks

if ya dont drain the PS system, there will be a lotta power steering fluid everywhere, i just ripped it out quickly and ruined my lawn instead of taking the time to drain, kinda an impatient person =P. There will be a lotta compressed air, and possibly some fuild from the AC aswell, you are suppose to have it taken to a place to dispose of properly, but once again, i just let it leak on my lawn. As for the belt, cant really help you there, main reason i took my off is because i couldnt get the belt to stay on, so i got use to not having either then removed the systems for the weight saving, but i am sure someone around here will have some better answers for you in that department

you dont need to take out the power steering just get a smaller belt. here are step by step instructions.

1. Remove belt.
2. drain a/c lines and disconnect from a/c compressor.
3. UN clip wires on a/c compressor.
4. then with a 12mm wrench and unbolt 4 long bolts from a/c compressor this will require a jack or lift because you need to be under the car to unbolt the two bolts on the bottom.
5. after unbolting a/c Compressor pull it out.
6. put on your new shorter belt tighten it up you got a power steering and now no more a/c.
7. i would keep the lines bolts and wires tucked so just in case you would want to put it back in.

Should take about 20mins very easy done it a couple times on mine i actually just put it back in yesterday. Hope this helps you.

thanks to everyone for all the help the only part that confuses me is the belt part i know nothing about belts:ohdamn:

sooo i think tomorrow is finally the day to remove my a/c and my question is does any one know what size belt i will need and how to safely remove th a/c lines any help with these issues would be great thanks

autozone part number: 400k5

The part number has changed since then but if you give them that, they will cross reference it to the new one. Either way it is a 5 rib 40" belt.

Safe removal of the A/C refrigerant should be done by a shop. There is NO other SAFE way to do it. If you are going to evacuate it into the atmosphere please take caution that if there is still a good amount of refrigerant left it will spray out at a high pressure.

What is that thing on your air filter?

a cheap heat sheild i found on ebay, straps right around the air filter. I wanted to make sure it was sucking in cold air, and with the engine on one side and the radiator on the other, i didnt see how it could hurt.

ok so i got everything that every ones said but what has me confused is replacing the belt is it self explanatory or how does it go on i don't want to put it on wrong if someone could just help me out that would be great thanks.

loop belt around the powersteering pulley, make sure the PS pump is loose and can slide forward and back. work the other end of the belt around the crank pulley, Space is tight but it can be done. Once you have the belt around both pulleys use a prybar or large screwdriver to pull the PS pump tight and tighten the adjuster bolts. start the car to make sure the belt is tight enough, adjust as necesssary, drive away and have fun!

so do you just put the belt in an oval shape because its on two things or does it still end up in a different shape
