3rd and 4th gear issues confused and need lots of help

My car is a 97 gst fwd 5speed. The car has 1st and 2nd gear when you put the car in 3rd it goes in but doesn't grab same for 4th. unless you put it from 2nd to 5th then back to 3rd then it will go in 3rd and 4th. any help would be greatly appreicated.

sounds like bad shift forks. does it grind at all when trying to put it in those gears or just nothing happens?

could be a good time for an upgrade... or a rebuild..

If it's not grinding when it happens, it could be that the shifter linkage needs adjusting. When mine was out of whack, i couldn't go from 2nd to 4th (it just wouldn't budge out of neutral to go into 4th), i always had to go in to third before i went into fourth. Adjusted the linkage and now it's fine.

yup, sounds like a linkage problem, as long as there no grinding.
