2nd gen Knock Sensor Conversion

So my local shop convinced me to "upgrade" to a 2nd gen knock sensor. My question, gentlemen, is a 2nd gen knock sensor really that much superior to a 1st gen?

It's just a narrow-band microphone. I'd not been aware there was a difference. What was their reason for this "upgrade"? Did it cost you more?

More or less they told me that the 1st gen didn't do it's job nearly as well as the 2nd does. So... having the problems that I did in the past I said whatever. How exactly does a knock sensor work? Is it like: oh, vibration I better retard the timing... or what?
