Newb here but trying. 95 TSi w/intake, BOV, and 187K well cared for miles. Problem started 1 month ago - shifting from 1st to 2nd., lights stayed on, engine stopped, I got towed home.

Balance belt broken, I ordered new timing belt, balance belt, gasket kit. Installed all according to forum & shop manual (all went smoothly till I found no compression)

Picked up new head & carefully installed - compression test good (not great but good) on all 4 cyl. Did timing belt again..

No spark. Discovered my crank sensor was destroyed when balance belt broke & read on here that sensor provides spark. Bought slightly used sensor & new sensor blade (old sensor blade destroyed with balance belt as well).

Today, installed new sensor & buttoned her all up.
Cool - got spark (got fuel as well - pulled line off fuel rail just to be sure).
Bad - it started but didn't sound like it was running on all 4 and shook and shuddered REALLY bad.

She's been down a month, its really hard to find a job/buy parts for my DSM without a ride!!

Please, any suggestions would be really appreciated. I very, very carefully did timing belt, tension, head swap, head gasket, checked all connections & fuses - obviously missed something...:ohdamn:

You most likely already did all this but, spark plugs with proper gap? Wires? Boost leak test? Is the BOV recirculated? Vacuum leak? Is there a check engine light? Is there gas in the car?

Sorry - tired.. fuel is half a tank chevron been in it for 1 month. NGK plugs are proper gap, 4 months ago. Plug wires are more than 2 years old, but are all routed where they're supposed to be.

No check engine light has come on before or after - I thought that was weird cause the cranksensor was totally destroyed!

Up until that 1-2 shift when the balance belt broke, the car was running great - 0 problems.

BOV isn't recirculated. I did literally wash most of the engine while I had it apart. yes, covered/taped things that shouldn't be wet.

I've owned the car for a little more than 2 years now and owned 2 gst's (99 pre ex-wife and 95 post ex). All I've done is routine maintance - oil & filter every 2K miles. Did clutch about 3K miles ago thanks to all here at forum (I did lots of reading). Also did trans fluid, rear diff fluid, and transfer case while I was down there.

Everything was all good on her until that belt broke...

I would try recirculating the BOV, since it's quick and easy. I would also double check the firing order which I think is the problem. The link should bring you to page 5, and post #139 gives you a picture of a stock ecu and stock cas. The other 1 is a non-95/96 cas with a 95 ecu.

Two very informative links. Sometimes things just get overlooked, even though you have experience with these cars. Hope this helps.

As you can see, telling you to do a boost leak test is standard procedure here.
but I am 99.99999999% ok really 100% sure that you are not losing any boost at idle, you can quote me on that.

look you said the car ran fine before the bs belt broke, so you need to retrace
your work. Start with the timing, make sure all marks are aligned in the
proper positions on the cam sprockets and crank...yes again.

If you can get the car started you can find out if a cylinder isn't firing by pulling
the injector wire, just unclip them before you start the car then pull one at a time and plug it back in the one that doesn't make your car run worse than now
when it is unplugged is the cylinder that is not firing. If you create a cel just
disconnect your battery for a bit.

id say do this, but with the car running - its easier to hear a difference in rpm's/vibrations and you'll know immediately.

id also second checking the timing - especially the balance/oil pump, but the injector thing is a lot easier so do that first.
