Hey guys I am wanting to see what gearing is in my transmission before I put it back in. Its not the biggest issue but the previous owner had paper work for a sheppard transmission. Anyways he also stated that he had swapped in evo 3 gearing. So pulled the transmission out of the garage. Figured I would do the good old rear end gear ratio check.
So I took my axles and put them into the transmission. Found the shift pattern by finding reverse. Once I found that I used that pattern to find 1st gear. So marked my top point and spun the input shaft. It took about 14.1-14.2 turns for the axles to spin one revolution.
I then took 14.1 and divided by the dsm 3.083 and got 4.57. Being this is a 50/50 split transmission this would mean the front is only doing 45.7% of the work.
Next I took the 14.1 and divided by the evo 3 gear of 2.785 and got 5.06. So being a 50/50 transmission this would be 50.6%. There is some error in this method and I am not splitting the transmission open to find out. But this would make 50% going to the front. Which is correct for a 50/50 split.
Now granted I could be doing this all wrong. Is there a method of checking gear ratios in these transmissions without pulling them apart. I am using my method for checking rear end gear ratios. I can figure this stuff out when the car is running but that is a few weeks away. So am I correct that my transmission has a 2.785 first gear?
I think he said it was just the first and third gears. And that he left 4th alone. I think he also left 5th gear alone. I guess I could go back and check this stuff out again. It got cooler and was starting to rain so I packed up for the day. But I could pull stuff out to check it again. Any thoughts?
