Hey guys.. had a couple questions.. first i was thinking about sending a throttle body out to concept illusions and having them bore it out to 55mm..

Question 1 - is doing this going to help me in any way.. i only have a short ram intake with K&N and a Header and downpipe... and by doing this, i'm not really letting more air in.. just making it less restrictive.. so will i see any difference?

Question 2 - should i do this.. will i have any troubles with the pcm not being able to mix the AF correctly?

i know they are kinda basic questions, but i dont know the answers, and dont want to put money into a worthless upgrade.. Thanks guys..

I have a friend with one. He said it gave the car a new feel, and that it was not only more responsive, but a little more powerful too. Removing obstructions to airflow will almost always help performance.

No, it has nothing to do with that. The sensors that tell the ECU how much fuel to mix in are untouched.

Actually more air will get in. If you hold a can with a 2 inch opening under a faucet and turn the water on for 2 seconds, then hold a can with a 2 1/2(i know that is a bigger jump in diameter than the TB would be)inch opening under a faucet and turn the water on for 2 seconds, I bet there will be more water in the can with the 2 1/2 inch openening...

No the only time you would experience any problem like that is when you boost(if you boost). The MAP(Manifold Absolute Pressure) sensor is what senses air in the manifold and sends signals to the ECU for adding/removing fuel. With a bigger throttle body, more air is going through, less restricted, but the pressure in the manifold will not be so great the MAP sensor tells the ECU to cut fuel.

VelocitàPaola had it..I just went more indepth:p

Just to let you guys know, they don't powder coat any more. I just sent off my TB about a month ago to them. It was an ok job. Lots of imperfections after they sent it back. Like little gouges all over, but the place I had my manifold port matched told me they weren't big enough to disrupt the air coming in. Expect to wait a while though. They seem to always have problems with the machine they use to do it, but they have good prices and products, just takes a while. Otherwise go with a Modern Performance 60mm TB. Kind of pricey, but probably worth it. Especially if you are going all motor, or if you decide to go turbo it will help alot. Remember you will have to port match the manifold though. I hope this helps.

About the most you want to open up the TB on a normally aspirated 2GNT is 56-57mm. Above that and you will lose velocity lower int he RPM range. If you would rather not send the TB back for corrections a couple times before you can actually use it, I would suggest you contact Eddy Fierro (fierro-racing.net) for all your porting needs instead of, well, those guys.

You can also salvage a Jeep 60mm from the yard if you feel like getting the most bang for your buck. There are write-ups on how to use it if you search around.

You should not have any issues with installing a bored TB to your car. Throttle response will improve and it should pull a bit harder up top.

So if i had it bored out to 55mm will i still have to have the manifold port matched? or is that not the issue so much as if i went with that 60mm you spoke of? thanks for all your imput guys..

It will make a difference, but it'd be even more noticeable if you had a cold air intake, and a modified (bored & polished) or aftermarket intake maifold.

As long as you disconnect the battery, install the bored out TB, and then hook the battery back up to start it. you should be fine. I read it somewhere, and unhooked the battery for my install. seemed to work fine. i just had to adjust the stop plate because the on the TB i purchased it was screwed in to far, making the eninge choke. after i adjusted it, all was good.

i do have a cold air intake (well short ram, not cold air) and i dont know what i am going to do yet. just have the intake mani and TB done, or just the TB. its all an issue of money right now. suspension will pry get done before that mod. and i might install an UDP before i do the TB and/or Intake Mani.. but thanks for all your help guys...

the stock opening is 55mm so no matching or porting is necessary

also i have a 55mm from CI. It sucks. The throttle plate is smaller than the opening. when you hold it to the light you can see a gap all the way around. Then in the throttle plate itself they had to drill three holes because the first one didnt line up to the bolts that hold it to the throttle shaft.

I hear ya Baxsom...I don't mean to bash on CI...b/c I have bought some good stuff from them, but mine is the same way...minus the 3 wholes you said they drilled. That's unfortunate :nono:

yeah i decided to go ahead and put it on because the 3rd hole is covered by the throttle shaft but the idle would not go below 2000rpms

i am looking into sending the TB to ARD to have it bored to 57 and a new throttle plate.
the powerdercoating job they did was great and the finish on the bore is good

it almost looks like they were in a hurry to get it out and didnt QC the finished product

i had to put the 52mm that they originally did for me (works great) back on

with them its hit or miss

Definitely HIT or MISS...Forgive my ignorance, but what is ARD? And how much do they charge? Let me know. I just had mine done and it also looked like it was in a hurry, but what the HAY it works anyway. They stopped powder coating though...no biggy, still works. Anyway baxsom let me know what about ARD and all that good stuff when you get a chance. Thanks

Thanks baxsom...I have seen those ones on ebay, but I think I am going to stick w/ the 55mm one for a while and maybe send it to ARD or whatever you are supposed to do to get a full 57mm or just drop the money for a MP 60mm TB. Thanks again man. :thumb:
