Ok, before we begin, some of you may already know this or have had this expierence but i thought it was worth sharing with the rest of the DSM community here.
It all started with a 926 dollar 95 TSi AWD Auto with about 120k of maintenace-less miles on it. The only gear it had at time of purchase was reverse( went into reverse after a long lag time ) and no drive gears at all. So we decided to purchase this Trans off ebay for 450 dollars, it was being sold as a "95-99 Eclipse GSX Auto JDM Transmission" . After we got it we began to see differences between the new one and old one. Like different torque converters, different bell housing for the different torque converters. Different Oil Temp plug and one connector had only 3 wires when the old one had 4. So i puit the new one, Mounts worked fine everything lined up EXCEPT the Torque to flex plate.
After a couple days of reading and searching and putting 2 and 2 together, i came up with what i thought was a late 1st gen trans( I know, I know, the mounts are different) . However, since thay made 7 bolts back in 93' , i decided to order a flexplate for a 93-94 gsx. Wouldnt you know it, the torque converter bolted right up to it. Mental Note here:Early 7 bolts in 1st gen cars have FLAT flex plates while 2G's have Stepped Flex plates.
So everything is together, car is on the ground for the first time in about a month. Fired her up! Threw it in all the gears after adding trans fluid, checked it, seemed good. Start it up and put it in reverse.....car went no where
....put it in drive(D)...goes into gear and wants to nudge foward. SO after doing some more reading and searching on here , i made a call to the dealer, had him give me ALL AUTO AWD Part numbers...one of them came close to the one on the new trans...that being a late 96 to 99 trans
...the no reverse issue i have decided taht ist an internal problem with the JDM trans. Having said that , we pushed it out 10 feet out of the garage today, after two full rotations on the wheels, the back tires started to fight the front tires....anybody want to guess why???
DING DING DING! Thats right! Whatever this tranny JDM thing is,DOES NOT have the correct gear ratio to match my read end....
....So the moral of the story for me is, NO MORE JDM TRANS for my 2g's and know what you have before you do all the work. Im sure theres more morals to this, ill think of them later.
One more side note: I know 2g's have lock up converters, my 95-99 JDM trans DID NOT have one....Hope you enjoyed this story, i sure did
...ill be rebuidling the original trans and putting it back in the car...but hey..its just money!
..gotta love Mitsubishi's!
..hope someone out there will have learned something from this, i sure did!
