My 95 gsx won't start. It’s never had any problems starting until I got in the other day and all I got when I turned the key was a click. The battery is nearly brand new, all the lights are bright and the radio works. I pulled the starter and hooked it directly to the battery, it's working just fine along with the solenoid. All the wiring appeared to be in good shape and I cleaned off all signs of corrosion. Any thoughts on what this could be.

My car has a manual transmission so is there a fuse for the clutch sensor or maybe some other fuse in the ignition system that I should check?

clutch safety switch was my problem. If I only knew it was so easy to test.

If you are having similar problems with your car and want to test the clutch safety switch all you have to do it unplug one tiny wire harness. Here is a video that shows exactly what you need to unplug (it's NOT the harness that connects directly to the switch.)

Who am I to doubt the great Defiant?

On a side note, did all GSXs come with a keyless entry/alarm? I've never had a remote for my car, I've always just used the key. When I was checking fuses I did find one for an alarm, but I guess they could have just put the fuse in alarm or not to save time.

I thought mine was jsut a keylessentry for about 4 years... till I opened the trunk with the alarm activated...

When you hit the power lock to lock wiht the driver's door open (dome or floor lights on) and no key in ignition no TT running do you get a green security light?

or when the car is off and you lock the door with teh key?

if so you probably have the alarm...

leave the window down, arm it and try opening the door AFTER the green light goes off... you'll know.

I already told you i have had the problem before and what it is. Somewhere in the wiring you are not getting enough power to the starter. A loose wire , corroded wire etc. If you want to go ahead and spend 100's of dollars like i did then be my guest. If you want to spend 10.00 on a button and be done with it then thats up to you. Learn from others mistakes.

The guy may want his car fixed correctly instead of rigging up some junk that his car didn't have from the factory... Maybe I am old fashioned, but I like the way my car starts with a key. I wonder what my auto mechanic friends would think if I had to start my car with a button because I was not smart enough to fix it correctly??? (I'll tell 'em I saved $200.00 with my button...)

Call me old fashion but I don't care what other people think i would rather save the 200.00 and have a button. If you want to start looking for the starter problem then do this strip down all the insulation from the starter solenoid wire (or replace it). If the wire is not corroded (on the inside) then spend more money replacing the power wire. If its not the power wire then spend more money replacing the start relay. If that doesn't work then spend more money buying an ign switch ... you get where i am going here ?

i can help you in saving you some money, most likely its not the starter and its not the battery . Good luck

Thanks for all the help guys

If it works for you awesome but that video only shows how to disconnect the switch not trouble shoot the problem. I tried that when i am having the problem and if you where having the same starting click i was getting then trust me you still have the problem. Try disconnecting the switch and start the car it wont make that "click" sound. Its a totally different problem but if not more power to you :thumb:

My car did exactly the same thing one time... It just clicked, and the starter and battery seemed fine.

It ended up being the neutral safety switch for me. Actually it was a little rubber bumper behind the clutch pedal that bumps the plastic button on the neutral safety switch. The bumper had dry rotted and fell out causing the button to not be fully depressed. I made a new bumper piece out of a golf tee I had (free fix) and the problem was solved.

Reach up under the dash and check out your switch. It could either be the switch or that bumper piece.. Just my guess, Hope it works for you! :dsm:

Before you run out and buy a new switch check for the little rubber bumper on the pedal that actually contacts the switch button. Is it still there? These rubber pieces get old and dryrotted and will sometimes fall out (if this one is gone, the pin on the switch will not get pushed in far enough to work correctly)
I checked with the dealer about mine and they wanted about $15.00 for the little rubber piece (and would have to special order it). I couldn't wait that long for the part so I fabricated a new piece out of a golf tee. It only cost me about 15 min of time to fab the part and best of all, I can use a key to start my car... Like normal :dsm:

Glad to see that you diagnosed/fixed you car correctly without having to resort to 'rigging'. Let us know about the little rubber piece and if it's the switch, let us know what it cost you to replace. My guess is that it won't be too high either way. :thumb:

Forget that, leave it unplugged...

why you would want to have to get in the car and push the clutch to the floor just to start the car (or bump the starter) is beyond me.

That is just useless
