I'm planning an engine build, but my question is which would be better, 2G forged pistons or 2G coated pistons? I've been told that forged would be "over engineering" and won't be nessasary. I'm just need a second, third, and so on opinion. Here's what I plan on running: 20-25psi on either an Evo III 16G or 20G, 350-400whp on pump, 8.5:1 or 9:1 compression. I know 9:1 will be a bi*** to tune, but would I have a better advantage? As for tuning I'm using DSMLink. I don't plan on really racing my 1G. It'll be more of a dd, but with some power. I also plan on having this engine for about 200k. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

20-25psi on pump will not net you 350-400 whp with either of those turbos... maybe the 350 on pump with a 20g at 25psi... and that will probably still be harder than you are thinking.? you do not NEED upgraded internals to attain your goals... my personal opinion. a forged piston is better then a (coated piston) but then again you could just coat a forged piston... =)

i would say stick with 8.5:1 CR

Well, I'm looking for something that will withstand the power and abuse. I'm not asking for a bulletproof bottom end, but I am asking for something near it, as well as around 200k. I've been told a forged bottom end will get me only 50k-75k.

Coating will only elongate any damage which is incurred, and can be had for as little as 40$ or less per piston which isn't much in the long run. That includes skirts and pistons. The coatings will help to keep the heat in the combustion chamber and off the pistons which will create more power and prolong the rebuild intervals.

Its really your choice depending, but the coating should help to keep your pistons pristine for more then 60-80k.

good luck:thumb:

Actually, my first talon netted 365hp with a Evo 3 big 16G @ 25 psi till redline, sure I had 8.5 coated pistons, But, I had a 3 angled head, Hks 272's, ported head with supertech valves and springs, also had a decent tubular manifold and a ported turbo, and lastly a custom intake, but thats not the most ive seen on a 16G. This was on 93 oct. btw.

Also custom water injection helped a bit for knock.

OH.. and don't forget the FP Cast Manifold, hands down, best $200 ive ever spent.

Stick with stock pistons

I recommend stock pistons/rods for anything under 500whp

Its not worth the hassle of going aftermarket if you dont need it...

Best setup iv'e come to see is the EVO 9 Pistons with 1g Rods 8.8:1 Compression :sneaky:

Not to mention Evo pistons are forged w/coatings and lighter than 2g

well the graveyard does a build with evo 9 pistons but i wouldnt bother doing that unless you need over 500hp which i doubt, it also adds unnecessary machining to the block which is just not worth it for you, 1g rods, and 2G pistons have never failed me in a 6-bolt swap. Like i said, i was going to buy the evo9 pistoned motor but it just wasn't worth the extra money. To me...and i have a strict budget my fiance told me!!

^ what he said. do you mean, to bore the block over for a new piston? because if you plan on installing new pistons, you should bore/hone the cylinders anyways.

you sound confused, i think you mean machining the 1g rods? because to fit either 2g or evo pistons on a 1g rod, you will need to have it machined, because the evo and 2g's use 7 bolt specs.

With stock rebuilds and low HP goals, i always have my machine shop check the block before deciding if im going to go with OEM Bore or .020, etc..

I would never bore out a block if it doesn't need it, less troubles....

So if you can get away with STD size pistons, go for it
