OK, i think im too tired at this time of night to figure this out, so im just going to ask. Im looking at getting a chip for my 97 GSX. If i find a 95 ECU, do i need to still get it socketed or is it ready to go. Or, can i get my 97 ECU socketed and acomplish the same thing.

Thank you to who ever saves my sanity.

You'll need to locate a 95 ecu and have it socketed, they aren't from the factory. You might get lucky and find a pre-socketed one. I got mine off of ebay for about ~200.

An eprom is a memory chip that can be rewritten. Only some 95's had an eprom ecu.

Getting your ecu socketed involved removing the eprom from the ecu, and soldering in a socket that the chip pushes into. This lets the new chip be inserted into it.

thanks for the help guys, ill start trying to hunt up a 95 ECU. can it be from an auto car if mines a stick? And / or can it be from a FWD if mines a AWD

yes it doesn't matter if it is from an AWD or FWD because its the same engine with different trannys in it. And there is a different ecu for the auto tranny i believe so it doesn't matter what car it came from. Just be sure to have that E on the cover on the ECU and your great.

The Eprom ECU can be seen Here scroll down to post #54 I actually have 2 of them :sneaky: and no I will not sell either. One is from my auto the other is from the MT donor car.

Well i think im just going to buy the ecu from dsmchips.com with the chip. I figure that im not going to save much of anything if i get a junkyard one and have it socketed. And it still is a non-tested junkyard one. Everyone seems to say good things about dsmchips.com, so i figure that seems like a good place to go.

FWD or AWD won't make a difference on the ECU. It will however not work in your car if it is a auto ecu.

WRONG! Auto ECU is the same part number as a Manul ECU.

does that go for all 97-99 ecu's?
exactly what years can be socketed?

ONLY the 95's Eprom ECU's can be socketed it must have the E on the sticker to be eledgable.

Some can be socketed! I have seen many MD312464 ecus not have an eprom :( so be careful when you go out and buy one! some advertise a 95 ecu but won't do what you want :)

I have a 97 GS-T with a stock ecu. Will a 95 ECU with an EPROM chip hook directly up with no problems? Also to get a chip will I have to send the the whole ECU and let them (dsmchips.com) do the rest?

the 95 ecu connects up perfect. exactly like your stock one. the eprom chip which is in the 95 ecu needs to be removed and replaced with a socket. you then order a brand new chip from dsmchips.com and when you get it, plug it in to the socket that was soldered in the eproms original location.

Hook up perfectly, yes, run properly no. To put a 95 ecu in a 97-99 car you need to change the spark plug wire order (1&2, 3&4) and invert the CAS, which can be done with Dsmlink. Auto, manual, fwd or awd, doesn't matter. Only 95's came with eprom ecu's and are the only 2g ecu that can be socketed (you cannot socket a non eprom ecu). Not every 95 had an eprom ecu, make sure the is an E in the lower right corner of the part # sicker. Or to be 100% sure open the case up (or get the seller to take a picture). If your looking at the board with the wiring harness connectors at the top the will be a chip about 3/4" by 2" in the bottom right corner, this is the eprom chip.

97-99 ECUs fire the coils reverse of the 95-96. You will need to swap your plug wires in order for it to start.

Swap Plugs 1 and 4 with 2 and 3, the order doesn't matter because both 1/4 and 2/3 fire at the same time.

And you need to swap your CAS around, or like stated above, do it using DSMLink.

If he get's it from dsmchips they invert the cas for you. Only thing you need to do is swap plug wire 1&2 and 3&4
