Hey everyone, I just picked up a 2G Mitsubishi Eclipse and I’m trying to figure out why it won’t start. According to the previous owner, the car started stuttering while he was driving, the oil light came on, and he pulled over and shut it off. After that, it wouldn’t start again — it cranks, but doesn’t fire up.

When I turn the key to the ON position, there’s a very high-pitched whining noise coming from the ECU area. It’s not super loud, but definitely noticeable — like an electronic whine. The engine just cranks and doesn’t try to start.

I haven’t done a full diagnosis yet, just trying to gather some opinions before tearing into it. No visible leaks or major signs of damage. I’m starting to wonder if the issue is electrical, something oil pressure-related, or even internal engine damage.

Has anyone experienced something like this? Could it be:
  • Bad ECU or capacitor failure?
  • Electrical short or bad ground?
  • Oil pump failure or low oil pressure?
  • Timing belt jumped or engine damage?

Any ideas or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Are you able to hook up a scan tool? I know when my ecu went out I lost power to my fuel pump and I had no spark. I'm not saying thats your problem but I'd try to scan it first and go from there.
First thing I'd check is make sure it does have oil in it. Does it sound like it's turning over the same as it did before? I've had bad ecus on mine so it is a possibility, I've never had one just die on the road it showed me signs of death before hand. Just start with the simple air, fuel, and spark method first.
