My transmission pops out of 3rd gear, pretty violently. It used to be at about 4000 rpms. Today, I was headed up a steep hill in 3rd and it popped out at about 2500. I heard it might be motor mounts, but the shifter would still stay in position wouldn't it? I bought this car wrecked and fixed it so I was wondering if that might have anything to do with it? Thanx if you can help. :dsm:

My friend had a 1g n/t and his would pop out of fourth eventually what happened was his clutch was bad and he had to replace his transmission cause pieces of clutch were bouncing around in there.

You might want to get it checked out soon before you need a new transmission.

A friend told me that it could be the shift fork or even a transmission rod. He's always been pretty dependable. However, I'd like to get a few more opinions before I do anything. All of the transmission shops around here want to completely replace the tranny because they don't know what is happening, but they haven't really looked at it either. I'd like to try and fix this myself if i can avoid tearing the transmission down. I appreciate all of your help.

defiantly your Synchros :thumb: good luck witht hat you might as well replace them all since you will inside the tranny already.might want to look into double synchros.

my car had a similar problem, it ended up screwing up my clutch, the cause ended up being the fact that i had the clutch pedal release set too high and it would start to pop out of gear. might check that too...alot cheaper thing to check and fix then going into the internals of the transmission. Good luck and let us know what happens. The transmission shop I used didn't even know it was possible to adjust the clutch pedal release...go figure WTF

Took it across county today to have it checked out. They replaced my shift forks and it hasn't done it again yet. They todl me if it was the synchros that it would grind going into gear more than likely. I also discovered some time yesterday that if i just shoved it into gear a little more, it would stay. Thanks for everyone's help. This is not only my first import but also my first 4 cylinder and my first 5 speed. So people around here kept telling me it might have been my "technique". well, thanks again I'll let you know if it stays working or if it goes wrong again...

Hey guys, just another follow up. After having the shifter fork replaced, it started up a bit more. I finally had a friend rev the engine while i watched it. I have a busted motor mount too. So I guess it could have been both working together against my baby... LOL well thanks all I hope this can help someone else too.
