I have read many 2G clutch job HOW TO posts and they all seem to make it sound like a PITA. (98 GSX)

Well its now time for me to replace my clutch (CFDF) and I am looking at motor thinking it may be easier to yank the motor and tranny out the car together than dick around under the car trying to pull just the tranny.

Anyone have any opinions on this matter?

Keep in mind I am doing this in my garage with the car on jackstands or I am pulling the motor out the top via cherry picker.

Thanks in advance,
Jeff Jeske

Well, it might be easier just to take the motor off the motor mounts and move it over a bit, then set the tranny down on a transmission jack. I've helped with that once and it seemed to work. When I took mine out, I took it out with the motor, but thats because I was doing a swap. If it were me, I'd rather not worry about taking and labeling all the sensors and connectors on the motor, and just slide it over.

So you left everything connected but just unbolted that one last mount?

Is the problem that there isn't enough room? Why would moving the motor over a little make any difference?

I left all the sensors on the motor connected, but disconnected the motor mounts so i could move the motor over and at an angle a bit. The tranny has that hump on on the side of it that goes into the passenger side space under the hood. You need to be able to get it out of that, so I gave myself a bit more room by moving the motor over to the drivers-side. If you are comfortable with taking the motor out completely, that might be easier, but I think its a hassle to go through that.

I just drop the tranny out. It's not that hard to do, just time consuming sometimes.

Do it on a Saturday that you have nothing else planned for :p

Pulling the entire powerplant to simply replace a clutch is overkill.

Are there any uncommon tools that would make life easier?

I know I need a clutch alignment tool but I hear that rear mount is a pain.....recommendations?

Well the clutch alignment tool isn't anything that special, Haynes says you can use a dowel rod that will fit. I'm sure someone on this site has the actual tool left over from a clutch swap that they could let you use. Another helpful thing would be a transmission jack...or just a jack with a tray on it that would hold the transmission as it is very heavy when you are dropping it down. Good way to get all bruised.

Another tip:

If you can get someone to help you, the job will go MUCH smoother.

Bribe a friend with beer or what not :thumb:

I would'nt yank the motor to get the clutch out. If you can get it up on jackstands that will give you enough clearance to get the tranny out. The hardest part is removing the bolts out of the rear tranny mount. If you can talk a local shop into renting you out a bay with a lift for maybe a sunday afternoon it'll make life a whole helluva lot easier.
