Cleveland,
Allright, here is the situation. I have a '97 AUTOMATIC GST that I picked up with a blown motor. I figured I would do the 6-bolt swap for some obvious reasons. Well, I have the motor in, but when I go to turn it over, the starter spins, but does not engage. Has anyone done this conversion and taken a 2G Auto and put in a 1G motor? There are spacing issues that I needed to build a template for, so I don't know if the issue is depth or if the starter is just not functioning properly. I will go home tonight and pull it, but if anyone knows some specs, it would probably help. Do the manual starters engage deeper than the automatics? Any help of info would be appreciated.

Pics of the project can be seen at http://www.sperko.net/eclipse.asp

Thanks,
Jason

I used the 2G torque convertor with my 2G tranny. None of that changed, I just had to mate the 6-bolt flexplate to it, along with the spacer that was required to allow the extra clearance in the bell housing. Soooo, it is the same torque convertor / starter combination that was in it originally.

Sorry for bringing this from the dead, however, I am the proud new owner of the 97 Auto GST in this topic now and I still can not figure out the starter issue. Everything is shimmed and I recently had the starter rebuilt and tested. When I try to fire it up it grinds horribly then I shut it down, then fire back up and it catches and starts almost like it is barely grabbing the teeth of the converter. It is the stock tranny and converter I believe. The flexplate has 4 ears on it that bolt to the converter. Maybe wrong converter? Any suggestions......Im running out.

i'm having this exact same issue so what i did was measure the distance the starter bendix come out then i measured the distance of the flexplate to the end of the tranny then just shimmed the tourqe converter

yea the shim only needs to be like 1/4in and you're going to need to get longer torque converter bolts(flex plat to torque converter bolts)

bringing this thread back to life. My GST still has yet to be fixed. I took it to a local tranny shop and decscribed the situation to a good friend and they looked at it and said something had been cut off the tranny or something to that nature, so a part had to be fabricated I was told. The fabricated part was put on and it silenced the grinding(basically) until I drove it home and starter it about 3 or 4 times then all the sudden the horrible grind came back. So needless to say the car is back to the shop for round two. And the tech told me he put a 1g starter on it along with the fabbed part. Hopefully it will get figured out soon because my itch to buy parts is getting to me.

ps. Is it a possibility that I need a different converter........maybe just buy the IPT hi-stall

im doing the same exact thing your doing, i just put a 2g trans in my 1g, 2 probles i had was the starter and the flex plate does not line up with the 2g tourqe converter i slotted mine out a hair to get the bolts in, the started a put two washers behind it to space it farther from the tc and it seems to be working fine... the 2g tc is thicker then then the 1g and start is engaged when bolted up....the only problem i have is i can figure out how to hook the wires up because a few plugs are different..
