What will happen if you rotate the engine counterclockwise by hand? Can it cause it to go out of timing?

If your timing belt is still on, you can rotate it whatever direction you want and it will stay in time.

No, it can jump time because the tension pulley doesn't keep the belt tight when turning the motor counter-clockwise.

Its not so much the pulley itself, more-so the auto tensioner. I've been trying to find the thread where I just read that and I cannot find it.. Its a fairly new thread too.. D:

Yea, I was a ding dong one time, when I first ever had a dsm. Way back in the day now that I think about it (damn time flies) and I think thats how I missed up my timing. I had to pay for a new timing job too.
