Hey guys whats up?

Im pretty new to the DSM scene and im here to ask for some advice.

Ill go ahead and list what I have from the top of my head so you all don't have to run to mr profile and look.

6 Bolt swap
DSM link (e-Prom)
650cc injectors
225 Walbro Fuel pump
EvoIII b16g Turbo (Boosting 19psi I believe.)
Bottom end has been rebuilt about 1500 miles ago with JE reforged Pistons and JE pro seal rings.

My lifters are worn out and I am replacing them because the ticking is ####ign annoying, and my buddy told me while im at it I should throw some Brian Crower 280 Race cams, springs and retainers in there while i have everything apart. He told me that there would be a significant power differance, and I just wanted to know what the veterans tuners would have to say about that statement. I do not have my car on a tune yet either, if i do decide to put the cams in, I am taking it down to Road Race to get it on a Tune, how much do they normally cost?

Thanks for you're time,
DSM_Vacelis

I wouldn't call myself a veteran, but I know that 280 cams are going to give you power a lot higher in the RPMs. They aren't exactly a great match with your E3 16G. And your car is going to idle pretty rough with them.

On average for a tune i would say $100 an hour. And 280s are too tall for your set up and definently to tall for road racing. You want to keep the power in the lower RPMs. 280 would add power up top and take away power on bottom.

So what would be my options from here? I was looking at bigger turbos as well, like a GT30

Grab some HKS or Delta 272's and call it the sweeeet. Heavy drag racing and 35r's on up is where the 280's come out to play.

i have a set of crower 272's and they work great. make sure to bleed your new lifters a couple times before u put them in!

Don't bother with the 280s unless you're revving over stock limiter and have head work / good intake manifold. It'll end up costing power vs using a 264 or 272 adv duration grind

I ran BC 280's to 8k on 1mm over valves and mild port work with 1g manifold. This was on a T04E-57 compressor. They were god awful to drive around on the streets, and even worse to ascend hills on the highway--and this is on a 2.4 stroker engine. Switched them for 272s and made much more mid range power, faster spool, and very comparable up top. Stick with a 264 or 272ish grind.

So far I have gotten more negative feedback for the 280's vs everything else (with the setup I have.) but my buddy is telling me that it's going to be amazing once I switch over to the 280s and he seems super knowledgeable about DSM in general. I AM going to be picking up a HX35 in the near future (mid to late january most likely.) So, I don't know what to do ha. Im supposed to go in and buy the parts tomorrow.

Doesnt matter unless you plan on building the head for some serious RPM. Those cams dont start to shine until somewhere around the 6k range. Take the advice given if this is a DD and not just a full blown drag car then go with a smaller grind. 272s seem to be the perfect street cam with minimal tradeoffs.

Well if you have more then one person telling you not to run the 280's on your setup and people who have actually used the 280's vs your one friend... I would probably listen to the advice from the majority.

In my opinion, instead of bc280's go with some bc272's or any other brand 272's. Here is a great thread to look at as he compares different cam's, and in the thread keltalon states

I will say make no mistake about it the 280s are not your typical drop in and go cams you will need adjustable cam gears to be able to make the necessary degreeable adjustments:

They do need to be degreed but the BC 280's are a great cam. Every dyno of the 280's ive ever seen gained all across the board. Big gains up top without giving up anything down low. Plus the idle sounds amazing.

But if you dont plan to atleast max that 16g out id say go a little smaller, bc 272's. Most people seem to be very happy with 16g and 272's. Ive seen a few 700+whp cars run the bc 280's for example.

Sorry missed the part about running a holset soon. Yea go with the 280's.

I agree with what most people said about 272's. A buddy of mine is running 272's in his car that runs a turbo a little bigger than a 35r. I run 272's in my car with a 50 trim and have no complaints. I wouldn't buy the 280's if I were you. Also, with bc 272's you don't need to change the valve springs if you don't want too but evo springs would be nice.

I have a 7blade Hx35 and i will be running 272s. Which is what i would suggest to you as well.

A lot of people are just giving opinion's with out first hand experience. I have run both 272's and am currently running bc 280's They were dropped in not degreed. Yes degreeing the cam will give you the true benefit. But as straight drop in i have no complain. It pulls all the way to redline. If your going with a hx35 you could benefit from 280's but could also get away with 272's. It really starts to shine at 5K and up and the idle is nice in my opinion.

Thanks, this answer seemed to help me with my decision, BC is completly out of 272 Cams anyways so I ordered the 280s with springs and retainers. I have Greg putting them in from millenium motorsports (most of you might know the name) here in temecula, and he is pretty damn good when it comes to DSM, So i will let you all know what's going on when I have the cams in and re-tune everything, even though im most likely getting a HX35r or GT30 within the next month here.

This is a good thread, I just installed BC 280s in my GST, and it idles a tad more aggressive than my older HKS 272s, I would never go back to 264s. I dropped both cams in at zero degress, just like the HKS 272s, no power loss, but they pull a little harder above 6500rpms. I love the 280s but I need to spend the money and get them dialed correctly. The GST shines with highway rolls and I can't wait to start warping from all of these corvettes, at least I hope I will warp away!
