I tried searching and all i got were articles on cam gears and timing. So anyways...

I was looking into buying cams for my car...I've heard about how it gives people a lot of power and everyone for the most part is satisfied with their hks cams.

So my question is should i go with hks 272/272s? Or 264/272s?

I know i don't have the most impressive list of mods by any means but i do plan on upgrading further.

Regrinds=taking stock cam grinding material off to shape the lobes to their desire, then shimming the lifters to the same thickness of what was taken off the cam.

ah hah...kinda get it...

the evo 16gs max hp rating is like 385 or somethin like that right?
Because i plan on getting a 16g but want the best 16g avaliable, any other bigger turbo than that would be past my desired power levels ...
If your desires are to stay with the EvoIII 16g, then the 264/272 would be perfect for you. If you plan on going any larger, the full 272's is what I'd get.

Ps. How's that Fidanza flywheel treating you?

think ill still get the 272/272s in case i ever change my mind about my hp end point LOL and I havent gotten to put that flywheel in action yet dan, the new engine (6bolt) isnt in yet, its built up now and ready to drop in but i just got back from L.A. yesterday , but i will probably begin the swap next week so after i get the new engine in ( with the flywheel i bought from you ) then ill let you know how it goes...
I didnt get one of those Fp kits, ran out of money, will just have to hope i have no problems, but i dont think i will ...

and if you upgrade the springs/retainers...would you see more hp because you see more rpms? Say the fp2 and the fp2x. Would the fp2x just give you a higher rev limit or would it add more hp as well in the lower end.

For a higher rev limit, upgrade your valvetrain along with cams. I recommend stand-alone too but it's not necessary. Oh yea...:D ...you'll see a huge HP increase...if you have a big (60-1 or bigger, IMO) turbo. Then all you need is a good oil pump and cooler....and then some anit-lag just for fun:thumb:

now degreeing...is that what the marks are on adjustable cams are for??? and can you use your stock cam gears if need be? Whats the benefit of them...better insurance mechanically?...or hp directly?...or both!

Just figure i'd ask these in the same thread since there is a lot of good advice here and i'm sure im not the only one who would like to know.

Stock cam gears are fine for a long while. Stock camshafts are pretty good for autoX. Depending on how much boost and how big of a blower you'll be runnin will tell you if you need to upgrade the camshafts.

i really recommend the Comp 272 (101200). They idle nicer than the HKS and are designed to open just a bit faster than other cams out there. Needless to say there are plenty of very good options out there but i personally like the Comp 272 for most street/track apps.

best of luck.

Cam gears are used to degree your cams in perfectly. Your stock cam gears should be fine and you'd be better off spending the money elsewhere.

Cam gears give you the option to fine tune your timing, and not to be a dick, if you don't know what they do you probably shouldn't get them... They are kinda unnecessary unless your are looking for the perfect tune... Maybe later on in your build they would be a good investment, but right now, you don't really need them...

now if i get 272s or similar...will i have any ill affects with my setup

if i were you i wouldnt worry about cams with your setup right now. but if you get cams and plan on goin with a bigger turbo go with the 272/272

o i've heard to spend the money elsewhere but i was just curious as to what they did. I assumed they were for degreeing but thank you for the advice everyone.

I have the FP1's installed in my car right now with a SBR GT-12 Turbo, which is a ball-bearing 57 trim. It definately hauls ass between 3500-6500, but after that the power falls of. I decided to use them because I called Forced Performance and talked to their tech support. I told them I wanted to keep my car a nice daily drive. They told me that the idle would be like stock, there would be little sacrifice in low RPM, mid and upper rpm would kick my ass, and high rpm would drop off. They were right on every point.

Having said that, I have coolant in my oil and I just swapped the oil-cooler out for a 90' air-cooled unit. If thats not the problem, and I have to pull the head, Im getting a set of springs and full 272's! I would love to pull hard up to 8500-9000 RPMs.

Any recommendations on springs?
