272 cam question

you do realize that "272" is just that, a number. The actual lift and duration of the cam is what matters. For example BC 272s are going to be a lot different than say HKS 272s

"best" depends on your setup. Obviously a cam designed for top end power is not going to be good on a t-25. Nor are stock cams good for a 42R

But if anything, check the AMS cam test on scoal evo. This was done on a evo 8, no mivec so it should result similar to DSM's

Best also depends on your budget. Like kelford 272s are supposed to be great but at $500+
BC272 are meh but for $300-$350 range
On a budget I say FP2. They are $214.50 each cam
I have fp1 intake/fp2 exhaust similar to a hks 264/272 combo and I am happy with them. I will be upgrading to straight fp2s though, hopefully soon.

Deta 272 regrinds cost me $260 including tax and core charge. They are modeled after the HKS 272s. I personally went to the shop and picked them up. They look great, we will see how they perform. From what I have read, they are awesome

Who fed you that line of crap? A valve is a valve as long as it has the same height as a stocker,
Stainless valve I assume?

The valves in my head where are actually longer than stock, supposedly matched to 272 cams. When using stock cams the valves do not close. I either have to find a reasonably priced set of cams or replace the valves. I do appriciate all of the members input.:thumb:

Err... longer valves will work the same way with a larger cam as well. You'd need shorter lifters to run longer valves. Longer valves are often used in domestic pushrod engines to correct valvetrain geometry when a large cam is used. They use shorter pushrods to compensate for the longer valve stem.

Edit: I almost forgot, if they are indeed longer valves, then a reground cam that requires shims would require fewer shims or none at all depending on how much longer the valves are over stock.

Your best bet would be to talk to the person that installed the valves. He (or she) should be able to tell you how much longer they are over stock and what corrections are to be used. I'm assuming it was done at a machine shop? Did they explain why they used longer valves and how they were meant to be used? Unless there is a specific reason you wanted them, they should have used stock length valves.

It really depends on your budget and goals. Like said, 272 is just a number like say stage1,2,etc. The different camshafts will vary slightly with lift and duration as well as ramp profile but still bear the 272. The 272 Kelfords, which are recently very popular, are more aggressive than a HKS 272,FP2,BC272 and make great power, but are expensive just like the HKS, which are tried and true but also an old cam grind. If you're on a tight budget you could go with the Delta regrinds or the FFWD "DKS" regrinds.
There's a lot of options

Send an email to robert at forced performance. He is the cam expert. Have a machine shop measure the spring height and pressure of your springs installed in your head. Then give that info to rob and he will tell you THE best cam to choose.

This is probably the best way to get your answer.
