Anyone have any confirmation if a 2gb with 255/40/17 on 17x9's w/+40mm offset clears the rear knuckle?
If so, please provide Tire make and model so I can look up the specifications of the tire.

According to Wret's write up, I should have ~2mm clearance at the knuckle and ~2mm clearance at the fender.

I guess if it's too close I can always use 2-3mm spacers.

I can get the wheels with a +35mm offset, but I don't want the tires to stick out that far.
Saving 5mm inboard would be pretty darn sweet.

The tires I'm looking at are 255/40/17 Falken RT-615's.
According to Falken's site, the section width is 10.3"
Section Width is measured at the sidewalls, and that's equivalent to 261.6mm, so subtract 255mm and you're left with 6.6mm, no divide that by 2 and you've got 3.3mm extra...
There just went my 2mm of knuckle clearance.
Based off of this, I'd need a +35mm offset to comfortably, clear the fat assed Falken RT-615's in 255/40/17.
Even with the +35mm offset it appears I'd only have ~2.7mm of knuckle clearance.

My current wheel/tire combo is 235/45/17 General Exclaims on Evo IX 17x8's w/+38mm offset.
The section width of this tire is 9.3" or 236.2mm's when mounted on a 8" wide rim.

Why are you wasting your time with the Azenis? The tire to have now is Dunlop Star Specs or Kumho XS for dry traction. RA1s are then a totally different tire and in a different class.

I would really suggest the Kumho XS.

PS- I dont know about +40, but I didnt have much room after my +35 17x9 setup. between the knuckle and rim.

Yeah, I'm gonna forego the +40 offset.

The reason for the Azenis is that I currently have a UHP tire that has a tread wear rating of 380, so the Azenis would have been good enough, plus Vulcan Tire sales sells the 255/40/17 for only $133 each.

When I do get my TDR 17x9 +35mm rims I'll probably go with Nitto NT-01's.

With the 17x9 +40 offset, you won't be able to clear all but the narrowest of 255 width tires. I had 255/40 Advan Neova AD07s on my car months ago, on my 17x9 +35 wheels, and there was very very little clearance to the rear knuckle, only a few mm (but this is one of the widest running tires you can get). Also, almost any R-compound tire you get will run wider than it's equivalent sized street tire.

I have a 17x9 rim +35 offset with a 5mm spacer and I clear 255/40/17 Bridgestone Potenza RE050 RFT by about 2mm on the knuckle. I do rub on the fender though. I am going to 245s and ditching the spacers with my next set of tires which will be the Dunlop Star Specs :)

They say a picture is worth a thousand words so here you go :) I have 5mm spacers in the rear only, no rubbing in the front.

Thanks for the heads up Beau.
I just didn't want my tires sticking out too far, but from the look of bvass' pic, 17x9 +35 with a 5mm would effectively make them a +30mm offset, and they don't stick out that bad.

Bvass, 95 and 96's have a different rear knuckle that does not allow 17x9 +35offset to run without spacers.

Thanks for the pic bro.

Hey Beau, you ever run 255/40/17 Nitto NT-01's on your 17x9 +35mm Volks?

Wow, so there really is a big difference between the 95/96 and 97-99 knuckles! I just so happen to have those EXACT same tires on the exact same wheel size/offset (minus the 5mm spacer) and they clear the rear knuckle pretty easily.. I'd say right around ~4mm, but I'll confirm that exact measurement. IF all information is accurate, that puts the clearance difference in the 2ga and 2gb knuckles at about 7mm or so. Pretty significant.

Haven't yet, but I have a set of Toyo R888s sitting at home waiting for my next track event :sneaky: I'll take some pics and update with the clearance on those when I throw them on.

EDIT: I forgot, the R888s I have sitting around are actually 235/40-17, so that won't really help much with this particular discussion.

I have heard of that before but I was never able to confirm it. A local DSM/EVO/STi tuner (Wingz Performance - Custom Tuning) with a 98 GSX was running the exact same wheel/tire combo as me with spacers and he said he rubs without them.

Can anyone find different part numbers for these?
