I just bought some 225/55/16 Falken fk-451s because I was told they should fit on my stock swirlies without a problem. I just got them in today and they look pretty huge. I don't If I got them put on whether they would rub. Can anyone confirm this for me? I don't know anything about wheel spacers, would those be helpful in my situtation?
BTW: I'm front wheel drive, do AWDs and FWDs have different width clearances?

Thanks,
Paul

I know they fit because I have had them in my car (90 GST) for track purposes and they help alot since we suffer from wheel spin. As a matter of fact I personally recomend this tire size to people who want to have the best result on a FWD with street tires.
I didn't had any rubbing problem, and Im lowered 1.5 inches, though at high speed on the road and with potholes this tires do hit the fenders slightly, no damage though, but thats if you're lowered

and no, there's no width clearance difference between 1g's (AWD vs FWD)

You did have the 225/55/16 and not the 225/50/16 I've heard that the 50s fit... but I wasn't sure about the 55s

Thanks,
Paul

I can't speak for the 55's because i had 45's but i can tell you about the loss of handling that occured because of the tires. With so much sidewall they flexed ALOT going around a turn. My car handled horribly. Not that a 1g awd handles that great from the get. Just something for you to consider. They will be fine in a straight line though :thumb:

That is true but you also have to consider sidewall height as a clearance issue. It's possible to rub the strut on some vehicles with this kind of aspect ratio. The general consensus sounds as if the 225/55 will not rub.

i have 225/55/16's on stock talon wheels on my gsx. If i hit a big pothole or bump, the rears hit the fender, but just barely. If i have another person in the car or more, most bumps will make the rears hit.

I ended up mounting them and they fit just fine. They got rid of some of my wheel gap too. The handling difference isn't really a factor either, I've done some really hard turns at high speeds and they haven't rubbed nor have I felt a decrease in handling ability. The sidewalls flex a little and you'll notice it if you make a quick jerk on the steering wheel on the highway, as long as you use a tad higher tire pressure the flex is minimal. I'm going to Auto X for the first time this Sunday! We'll see how the tires and I hold up. I would reccomend these to anyone with the stock wheels, I can now launch my car at 4500 rpm on the street barely slipping the clutch with very minimal traction loss as opposed to the 3000rpm I could barely launch with on the street. I'm going to try for a 2.1 or 2.0 60ft on these tires tomorrow at the track wish me luck. :)

I run them with no problems on my stock swirlies, I use them for drag racing... I cut a 1.78 60 ft with some old tires in that size that my friend gave me just so I could make the track day...

I'm FWD though :).
Oh and it ended up raining before the track event so the track condition never really got up to par. The best 60ft I pulled last night was a 2.5 :barf: and my clutch was slipping kinda bad :( I might have been launching a little greedily at 4500rpm, next time at the track I'll try 3500-3800 so as not to heat up my clutch as much to make it slip.

I think i paid 350 shipped to my door, got them in 2 days because the warehouse isnt far from my house. Might have been able to find a better deal possibly, but needed them fast and that was the fastest i could get them.
