So my friend wants to trade me my 14b for his Hahn super tdo6 20g because his car is stock and he can't use it. Now from what I have read everyone who has used this turbo hated it. So with that in mind. I was thinking of swapping the hot side for a 7cm to try to counteract the lag that the 10cm t3 housing gives. Based upon the parts on my car I think it would be ok to trade because I would keep most of the spool up that I already have now, with more top end.

What do you think? Trade or keep the 14b.
 
Based on the mods in your profile..The 14b would be my choice..Now thats not saying later you wont want to mod even more.Then the 20g would come into mind..But honestly on your injectors your cant really push either turbo which is why i say stick with the 14b for now.
 
I agree. Based with mods in profile i'd say 14b. You can take it pretty far with some boost. However if you plan on going bigger the 20g is mighty fun.
 
O.P. I don't know who everyone is and why they hate the hrc 20g its a mhi turbo what's to hate. I almost ran 11's with my hrc 16g not sure what's to hate about that. These people that say they hate the turbo probably never even used it or had the correct mods to support the turbo. And the turbo isn't laggy at all, any turbo bigger than stock is going to be laggy. Anyway if you don't have the mods for a 20g yet stick with the 14b.

I believe he was referring to what the OP mentioned.

If you change the housing on the 20g to MHI one, you're also likely going to need an O2 mounted wastegate which will run you alot more money.
 
Currently I'm running 20psi on the 14b at 70% idc. I have been reading many different threads for the last couple of days and there is an overwhelming group of those threads that do not like this turbo and say your better off with a non "super" version. Why would I need a new waste gate? I couldn't in theory use the internal gate that is built in?
 
It's a no brainer for me, trade asap. The worst thing that happens is you'll need a $100 turbine housing to make it something that you really like.

I really like 20g's with big turbines. One of my favorite DSMs was a 1g with a 20g that had the T3 turbine housing for a sy/ty. It did take a bit to spool up, but when you heard it making that sound like a jet airplane on take off you knew that just about anyone foolish enough to be racing you was going to be in your rear view mirror.

Looking at your mods you need bigger injectors and a 255 fuel pump to really use the 20g. Until you get those, you'll be faster with the 14b having the same amount of power sooner. Once you have the fuel to match the extra air the 20g is flowing it will be awesome.
 
The evo 9 fuel pump rewired won't be enough to support it? I know the injectors need to be bigger but perhaps ill look for something bigger but the guy with the turbo has 1250cc for sale.
 
buy the biggest injectors you can afford. You will likely need larger ones if you do not. SO take his!

IDK how far a 190 fp will take you. I know I maxed the stock one pretty fast. Now running a 255. 20g is a bolt on turbo. All you really need is link, injectors, fuel pump and some self control (stay at very low boost levels) until you have ALL supporting mods.

You will also gain gas mileage this way until you are able to turn the boost up.
 
So after some long thought about this project I've decided to go on ahead a trade with him. But I want to put a 7cm housing on the hot side so I can keep some of the spool properties of a smaller turbo. Not to mention I don't want to deal with the flanger business. I have been searching to see if anyone had used a 7cm housing on the 20g but I haven't come up with much. And looking for a 7cm hot side if anyone has one they don't need.
 
Yea but the t3 housing is crazy big and super slow in the power department. I know once it get going it will move but that's why I want the 05 exhaust housing. I figure it will spool slightly slower and not destroy my transmission instantly when the boost come on. But fast enough for daily use not just wot.
 
With the 05 housing it will bolt up to a fp manifold. The 05 will make it spool a little faster but wont have as much top end

Yes I figure it won't have has much as the t3 housing but that's ok I can always change it back. But I figure it will be somewhere in between a tdo5 20g and a td06. And I'm ok with that. I'm not trying to break the sound barrier. Also I want it to bolt up and not have to use the adapter.
 
Are they different internally? Or is it just the inlet that changes? On that note what would be the difference in spool up time between a 7cm and 8cm?
The housing's inlet and outlet is essentially the same, the difference is in the housing's nozzle area. A factory 14B comes witn a 6 square centimeter nozzle area housing, a 16G has a 7 square cm nozzle area, and this FP housing I've linked is just a little more open than the stock 16G housing at 8 square cm. Greddy used an 8cm bolt-on housing on their 18G upgrade kits, and I'm fairly certain the FP housing is very close to the same piece.

You'll have a little more lag with the larger housing. You can also check out the Kinugawa website for a housing:

Kinugawa is an option, and I've used their feed/return lines myself, but I'd trust FP to use quality materials and have everything machined correctly right from the get-go on something this crucial. Also, you'd get to support a vendor that supports us. You might want to check out this post before using a Kinugawa housing.

Yes, you'll have a few hundred rpm more lag on the bigger housing, but you'll also make more power, be more efficient and flow more air at the same boost level with it.

If you take a measurement of the exhaust side wheel you can get an idea of which Evo 1-3 housing you need.
The Evo 1-3 housings are all cast for the smaller TD05H exhaust wheel, but the Evo 3 housing has much less material. Machining an E3 housing for the TD06H wheel makes it pretty thin, so look for one off of an Evo 1-2 if you want to have a 7cm housing machined for the TD06H.

I must have missed it, but I didn't see that he mentioned what exhaust wheel he had. At any rate, you're correct, I've also been told by a local turbo rebuilder that the Evo 3 housing wouldn't be suitable for the 6H wheel because of it having less material and either one of your recommendations would work.
 
20g is a great turbo if you are running higher boost, 20+ psi and that things really comes alive. By all means, if someone wants to trade your 14b for a 20g, DO IT. That turbo is worth 3 times the value of yours EASILY. Hell do the trade and if you are worried, go and buy a used 14b for like 50-100$. I had a Hahn 20g with a 7cm housing on my old 2g and loved it, spooled a little slower at the bottom but up top it came alive.
 
Well I'm hoping to have the swap done this weekend. I eventually plan to run over 20 but that's a process. If there's isn't too much difference in the spool department I guess I'll just go with the 8cm and hopefully it bolts right up without and issues. I think this combinatios will work well with the setup I have now. And if I ever decide I want more power the this turbo is fairly capable of giving more fairly easily. Also I think the down firing fp manifold will help with the spooling so.. Let's make some power!!!

After all is said and done ill report back how it worked out.
