turns out my head gasket is bad. i have wanted to upgrade the turbo for awhile and i feel like this is a good chance to do it since i have a reason to remove the head. if i slap a 20g or maybe a 16g on it with headers and a MBC and just keep the boost low say maybe 16psi will it be okay to run that? will there be any difference than having a 14b? ill have stock fuel setup since i have no tuning software.

Why upgrade the turbo when you don't have the supporting mods? Fix your HG, then either get the 20g and supporting mods, or just save your money for the mods/turbo.

If the turbo blows that's one thing, but the 20G is going to "feel" much slower than a 14B at the same boost level because it contains 1000-1200rpms of additional lag. Theoretically it's making more power by providing more airflow but you'll never know on the street.

I have a 14b no mods and 11 psi. If i were to put on a 16g i'ed do the same (wastegate pressure). From what can be gathered on tuners, a 16g w/no mods at lowest boost is tinkering with disaster at best. Support the 16/20g to at least be happy with it :)

injectors 550+
tuning options like afc, ecm/dsmlink or the like

The guys are right, and id prsonally ger supporting mods around the turbo before i even upgrade the turbo as im doing right now, just seems like the smarter way to go about things as im also shooting for a 20g by the summer. If i were you start piecing the supporting mods to be ready for it and you should be able to max it out, once you reach that point safely then upgrade, otherwise its just a waste of money and youll wonder what went wrong like i did when i first got my talon. These cars seem to be very tempermental if you dont go about things the right way.

Personally, I'd get link if i were you over a new turbo. You will need it to upgrade your turbo later on and even on a stock set up you can make huge improvements because of the ability to tune.

I've always wanted to take a 100% stock DSM and tune it with ECMlink to see what can be made :p.

Fix the gasket and get your maintenance done if you havent. Then get some sort of tuning device; I recommend ECMlink regardless if you are on a budget or not. Tune your car with that 14b and take it to its full potential and see how you like it before going bigger. My 2 cent.

I personally run a 20g and I am able to push 20+lbs at low rpm in 2nd gear. But it takes the supporting mods to get it that way. I would start with a e.m.s.,wally 255,3in exhaust, nice injector/maf combo or s.d,then worry about a turbo upgrade. There are alot of guys pushing really good #'s with the 14b,but if the turbo has issues then maybe upgrade to a nice small 16g or something depending on your goals. The 14b is a really capable turbo though if its still running good then keep it and spend elsewhere first

Like everyone else has stated, get ECMLink first. period. You are going to have to anyways if you plan on upgrading things and with out it your cars going to run like shit and you're going to wonder why you've done all these things to it and it's doing nothing. Get the supporting factors before the turbo.

I agree with these guys.. However, back a couple years ago when I started to mod my spyder, I did it all ass backwards.. But, things went well for me and never had any issues. So I just want to throw this in here.

This was on a 20g with ext w/g 10lb spring. 3"exhaust, 255 pump w/ afpr, and BC272s.. STOCK injectors and no tune.. Made 297 whp. However my IDCs were 120+ by redline.. Dont do it!! Your results probably wont be just like mine..!

I ran 13-14 psi on my 16g on my 2g with stock injectors for a year and a half with no problems. But you wont notice much of a difference between it and the 14b. I would buy some sort of logging software, something to tune with, and a wideband, and the biggest set of injectors you can run with your tuning set up.

DSM link is the best choice but if you can get something to watch your timing and an safc you will be ok.

650cc injectors, a maxed out 14b (20psi), and a good tune with a good timing curve will make your car SO MUCH FASTER than just slapping a 20g on a stock car.
