I am currently running a small 16g. The bolts for the J pipe are stripped out and the compressor wheel is damaged. The turbo has absolutely NO shaft play and I think it would be a shame just to get rid of it. I was thinking about upgrading the compressor cover and wheel to a 20g wheel/housing since I need to replace it anyway, but I have read that the 20g wheel will overrun the tdo5 7cm turbine housing. I have already ported the turbine housing out but there is still room to port it out more. Will porting make THAT big of a difference and would it be a real waste of money to go with the 20g or should I just go with the 18 or evo 16g? Id prefer the 20g out of three because it gives me room to grow but I also don't want my turbo to be inneficient. If you post your opinion please state why you think it will be better. This car is also my daily driver.

I also plan to upgrade fuel injectors soon...switching to e85.

Im looking for about 400-430 whp with the new wheel and cover. My car is a 97 gst...mods include a 1g 7bolt engine, 1g TB, ported 1g head & 1g intake mani, arp headstuds, cometic hg, Punishment fmic, evo 560s, wally 255, apexi 3" dp, 3" exhaust no cat/muffler, dsmlink v3.

Thanks

From what i have read from threads posted on here, that 400+ horse out of a E316G is very hard to do, so i think you might want to consider one of your other 2 options. Please someone correct me if i am wrong on this ....

20G is too big for the TD05 housing, yes it will work but you're over the surge limit long before the wheel maxes out. Based on your stated opinions and goals I would go with the bastard 20G in the specially configured TD05 housing or the E316G and tune the shit out of your car. The 20G will spool slow enough so as to not create ridiculous wheelspin on your FWD and it will meet your power goals; however it WILL spin on launch and also probably when you hit full boost.(at high enough boost levels) The E316G is a much more manageable street turbo and will get you close to your goals without much wheelspin and it will also require smaller injectors, which will make your engine management investment smaller.
It comes down to how much time and money you are willing to invest and what sort of overall drivability you want. E316G is a fun mid-level turbo for DD's making 350-390hp with easily manageable characteristics. The 20G is an entry-level "big" turbo which requires greater tuning skills and more trade-offs for basic drivability, in return for more power potential. Hope this was helpful.

The 20g cover/wheel is too big even if I port the shit out of the tdo5 housing and run an external WG off the manifold? What if I have it clipped? At what boost level will it start to pass the surge limit? Id like to run at least 25lbs with fast spool. I could run 25lbs on a e316g so why not a tdo5 20g. It seems it would be easier for the 20g compressor to process the air because the wheel is bigger. Id love to get rid of the J pipe all together.

You can definately run the 20G wheel in a TD05 housing. If you port the shit out of it, it's all to the better. That being said, the 20G wheel properly belongs in a TD06 housing to reach it's full potential.

Here are a couple of links that explain things:
First a TD06 20G compressor map, with an explanation of PR, CFM and surge limits... Compressor Flow Maps and Calculations

Next a detailed and well informed discussion regarding the use of a TD05 20G on 2.0 motors... Realistic Td05 20g power [Archive] - ScoobyNet

Hope this helps you with your decision. Good Luck.

Ok, I understand a little better now. You have to match the hot side and cold side up more evenly to avoid compressor surge. I can run the 20g compressor wheel in a tdo6 compressor housing but it will push in more air than the tdo5 exhaust housing can flow and hit the surge limit. The 20g wheel would be better suited in the tdo5 compressor housing but can't utilize its full potential. I think a better combination for my goals and would be an 18g wheel/ compressor housing. Thanks for the links 5150.

18G will definately work better than 20G for your plan but you might be surprised at how well the E316 works; in my opinion it is a very underrated turbo. No, you won't get 400+, at least not without some serious tuning but you will be amazed at how much "useful" power is available. Good luck with your build, I hope you reach your goals.
