This really is exciting to hear! Glad to see you guys move back to the Galant.

Just curious as to where you are going to mount that surge tank. I need to build one myself as well this year and just curious as to your placement.

Just curious as to where you are going to mount that surge tank. I need to build one myself as well this year and just curious as to your placement.

I've been going back and forth with the location. Currently its located in the trunk in the drivers rear corner. I put it there for two simple reasons. First it presented a smaller area to "wall off" and secondly in the of a fuel leak that area of the trunk floor tapers off into the rear fender area where I simply put a drain hole in. That would keep fuel from pooling in that area.

Some of the cons of putting it there is if I were to back into a wall hard enough that tank could be compromised. What's keeping me from moving it is knowing that it is semi-protected because its sitting on top of the rear frame rail that accepts the bumper strut. That, to me, means that if I hit hard enough to crunch the surge tank then my main fuel tank is just as likely to get crunched too.

I am also considering placing it between the rear strut towers bolted to the floor. That would put it in the safest place in the event of an accident but, it really puts me at risk in the event of a fuel leak. The spare tire well is right there and its a perfect spot for fuel to pool. It also means I have to build a bigger and more complex bulk head wall to go along the back seat and under the rear speaker deck.

The other option is to mount it under the car. That makes sense for fuel pooling and depending on where you mount it can be safe in a crash as well. But there are not a lot of options under the car to mount it. The biggest area is up under where the diff is located and along the rear behind the rear tire. I don't want it near the diff because the exhaust passes through that location and it would get beat to death in the event of a u-joint failure. Mounting it behind the rear tire makes it even more vulnerable then the corner of the trunk.

So, right now I'm planning of the rear drivers corner. I built it out of 1/8" extruded aluminum which should able to sustain a beating with a hammer without rupturing. Also, I am not limited by any racing sanctioning body with the location. I have to be smart and careful how I do things but One Lap pretty much unlimited when it comes to modifications.

Love the way that surge tank looks, with what you said I think the best position to place it in is where you have it now, seems to make the most since. I have always loved watching your build up to get ready for the One Lap of America race, I remember the first time you guys entered it with the galant such a great read.

I'll update the thread once we get on the dyno but we are shooting for 450whp on a new 2.3L I'm building.

A quick update on the project. The engine is assembled and waiting to go back in. I am still in the process of picking out a clutch and the transmission isn't back yet. So the process has been stalled a bit.

I've begun collecting the parts to build a manual transmission cooler ala CJ Moses and I'll detail that as I go on. The surge tank is 95% done I'm just waiting on a few AN fittings and mounting the JayRacing pump to finish it. Once that's done I'll detail everything I did to build it.

I have some smaller things to work on like a bad front wheel bearing, wiring, etc..etc. that will keep me busy until the transmission comes back.

What clutches are you guys looking into? Almost seems like you could run anything with the the horsepower goal you have set. Have you looked at maybe a southbend or anything they seem to have a pretty good rep.

With a 2.3L and the FP HTA DSM76 turbo we should be looking at that magic 450/450 hp/tq range which ruffly works out to over 500ftlb of torque at the crank. That limits our clutch choices considerably. Those numbers are from STM'd dyno in which cars have gone low 11-high 10's with 400whp. I'm am not saying I'll be going 10's. Even if I could the weight of the car, aero, and the style of driving I have to do to hold everything together wouldn't let me.

I will tell you that our sponsors who don't rebuild transmissions as there main source of income are strongly suggesting a twin plate clutch like the SB or PTT. They hold the power and will actually release to allow the transmission to shift.

Our transmission sponsors/connections are all saying no, no, no! to a twin plate. They think I'll break something because of how positively it engages. Not to mention the wear on the transmission itself. They are suggesting that its a wise move on my part to have the clutch the weak link as I can always turn the boost down. Otherwise my transfer case and transmission become the weak links and if I break one of those on One Lap I'm going to be in a world of hurt.

Its no secret that this year we've picked a charity to support while we battle it out in the One Lap of America race. We've partnered with the Wounded Warrior project to help raise awareness and support for this most worthy of causes.

My co-driver Steve, put together a cool poster to help spread the word. Can't wait to get these printed up and sent out to all of our valuable supporters.

Hot off the presses Dunlop tire sponsors the RochesterDSM One Lap of America team with a set of there amazing new Direzza ZII extreme performance tires. There isn't a lot of information out there about these tires and we are proud to be one the first teams testing these tires. With 8 days of racing and almost 5000 miles in transit we are going to give these tires a workout and we'll report back what we learn. For more information check out our website.

Tim, what did you pick for a clutch?

We went with a ACT2600 with a sprung 6-puck disc. I struggled with choosing a clutch for a long time. Everybody who drag races says get a twin and everyoneI who builds a transmission says don't buy a twin. At the end of the day if we make so much power the clutch won't hold we can turn the boost down and still finish the race. If the clutch never slips and we blow the guts out of the transmission we are dead in the water and going home on a trailer.

The bottom line is the transmission is rated to about 550ftlb of torque and the clutch is rated to 530ftlb. Sacrifice the clutch save the transmission.

Its been in the car for a couple of weeks now. I think it has 335 miles on it. It drives great and most of the time I don't realize its a 6-puck. It held 425whp on the dyno at 23psi and 28psi on the street so I am confident that it will do the job.

If it doesn't hold the torque, you could upgrade to a 2900 lb pressure plate. Any thoughts on that?

I did but the idea is for the clutch NOT to hold the torque. The boost is also set to limit the power and torque because for the race finishing is winning. So I've intentionally made the clutch the weak link instead of the transmission.

Dang I seen your dates you will be in Daytona I am moving down there on the 15th of may bummed really wanted to meet up and check your car out...

This year we are running the race for a cause. We are trying to raise support and awareness for the Wounded Warrior Project.

Home - Wounded Warrior Project

The Wounded Warrior Project is a great organization that directly helps our wounded solders from the minute they get off the plane. They help in all facets of life and seeing how Federal VA benefits can take up to a year to kick in, having a support system for our bravest citizens is crucial.

Our goal this year is $5000 and we are well on our way to hitting that mark. If you would like to track our fund raising progress or if you would like to donate here is a link on how to do that on our behalf.

I would like to personally thank Harry Blanchard who owns ThreeSPeed.com, maker of the ThreeSPeed scatter shield, for taking an early and resounded lead in the donations race with a $1000 donation.

Thank you,

Tim Harper

Dang that's awesome of Harry. Makes me happy to see the community stepping up!

Harry rocks.

If we could get everybody to put $10 into this cause it wouldn't take long to fill in the rest of that goal.

Today is sticker and registration day. Its a day to reconnect with old friends, meet new ones, and generally enjoy a quiet easy day. An easy day before the storm. One Lap is grind. Day after day off endless transit driving and racing. If you’re lucky there is nothing to fix. We are normally not lucky. So Sticker day is an easy day.
