TunersNation has stepped up and sponsored the One Lap VR-4 with a new set of brakes. It’s no easy task matching the stopping power and economical maintenance cost of the Baer Track system it replaces. So when Garfield called with the news I was sceptical at first but when the parts started showing up and I could actually put them in my hands it became clear that these new brakes are up to the task.

TunerNation has supplied us with one of there custom 3000GT VR4 kits for the Galant VR-4. The kit uses the 4-piston calliper from the 91-93 GT VR4 along with its 12.4” rotor. The callipers are big and beefy. Cast from only two pieces and with no bridging bolts they feature 0 calliper flex. This allows for an internal fluid passage between halves which is a more durable design then the Brembo/Wilwood external balance line.

The rotors are from DBA 4000 series which are DBA’s mid-series enhanced performance rotor features Thermal Stability Profiling for improved heat handling and Thermo-Graphicpaint markings for effective heat monitoring. This rotor incorporates the innovative Kangaroo Paw ventilation design, which runs cooler, stronger and outperforms traditional straight vane disc rotors by up to 20%.

Mounting the callipers are a set of TunerNation own mounting brackets water jet cut from ½” steel. Hardened bolts hold everything in place and a new set of SS brake lines were included too.

To make sure the One Lap VR-4 was well prepared for battle TunersNation sent along two sets of rotors, callipers, and brackets!

Garfield, using one of his countless connections in the business, contacted the people at Project Mu. Project Mu is like the Hawk Brakes of Japan. Project Mu donated a set of there HPC+ which feature a high coefficient of friction with the ability to take a beating at the track.

Do you really need that much brake? I'm no expert, but that seems like a real overkill for a GVR4 or any DSM. Let us know how they work out for you, as the 3Si brake upgrade may be cheap to those of us who can find some salvage yard parts.

For the One Lap of America race you need all the stopping power you can get and seeing how they use stock Mitsubishi calipers they should be rock solid reliable.

One of my One Lap co-drivers from last year, Mike, stopped over to drop off my engine hoist and he took a look at the calipers and said they were identical to ones on his 94 TT Supra. That was music to my ears because I know how hard he works the brakes at Watkins Glen and he has had 0 problems with them. His brakes, like the 94+ 3000 GT VR4's, use a slightly bigger rotor but the only change to the caliper is a little longer mounting tabs.

I have a modded set of 3000gt vr4 calipers, with a audi rotor thats 30m.m. thick on my 1ga. The stopping power over the 2g set-up I was using is waayyy better. I bet I can stop from 60mph in 70 ft. I machined about 3/16 of material off the rim side face to clear my rims. And for the audi rotor to work just turned some material off my hubs. Made my own adapter plates, and my total cost was about $350. The biggest problem I was having was the stock 1g rotor was to thin and would heat up quickly.

And I'm using some Smyth Automotive ceramic pads. My old set up was porterfield rs4 pads with brembo rotors and 2g calipers. There is no comparision!! I have about 320 whp on Buschurs Dyno. I used ar400 material for the mounts and they are billet with machined standoffs. No washers for spacers. You can NEVER have to much brakes.
