Hey guys I'm planning a build this year on my recently aquired 91 awd talon. Was wondering what are the (proper) choices for turbos for a 2.3l stroker. I'm using a 2.4l crank from an '89 sonata. I'm planning my build list and funds and was wondering whats too small for turbo and whats too large?
I was thinking of going with a t04e? I'm aiming for 300-400hp street.

FYI just asking about turbo choices right now, I have 14 years of auto experience but this is my first turbo build on a dsm.

Thanks in advance.

You should consider an HX-40 or even an HX-35. The 35 will spool very fast with that 2.3l. and the 40 will flow a lot more air but spool will be a little slower.

hx35 on a 2.3 would make for a beast of a street car.

IMO, the spool and airflow of a bolt-on HX40 is a perfect fit for a 2.3L street car. You can tune for a safe 400hp with your eyes closed (with the right mods of course), and the power curve is very streetable. (And of course you have a lot more power on tap if you want it).

With anything making comparable low-end torque at a faster spool, you're going to start having traction issues on street tires.

I say go with at least the hx-35 or the hx-40 if you think you may want more power down the road. I had the latter on a 2.0 and that was a nice power curve, yours would be even fatter.
