1st Gen loud idle/faint deep thud

Hey my friends lookin at a DSM, its a 1st Gen and when its started up it idles really loud. He drove it around a little bit then came back and the loud idle went away and began to quiet down. Also there is a noise which sounds like coming from the exhaust maybe? It is like a faint deep thud or something like that. If you could help me figure out what it is and if it is a problem before he buys it it would be appericated.

That's not much to go off of as far as the thud goes. Concerning the loudness there is a good chance it's an exhaust leak. When you start the car pop the hood feel around the exhaust manifold, turbo and the exhaust system. If something is very loose especially the intake mani it can be very loud and as the car warms up and every thing expands a little it will get a little quieter. Try to locate the source of the thudding. It would also help if you described the sound a little better. It could be the exhaust hitting the car, it could be a busted up cat, a heat sheild, the motor ready to eat it's self alive, or any number of other things. Does it thud at the rpm of the car, ? times/second? Does it sound like metal on metal, rubber on metal, squirrel on rubber, like your grand pappys dentures ratteling on a steak bone?

haha, it sounded like it was from the manifold or something i was like a constant thud.........thud.........thud.......ect but yeah ill check that out...thanks alot for the help though
