hey guys i have a 1997 gst with original transmission all gears seem to be fine but 1st gear is a pain to get in i try to get it in feels like its in but as soon as i let off the clutch a lil it grinds hard:banghead: ill try to put it in 2nd and put it in 1st kinda hard and some times itll work but most of the time it dosent itll just grind ....i need help with this bad all the other gears feel fine and grab fine its just first gear i caint even stop at a light with out running into this problem...please help thanks guys

sounds like your syncro is completely gone did it to me with 4th gear in my gs

thanks guys if its my synchro where would i look up to buy one and how would i do the install thanks

your gonna need a tranny rebuild if you want to keep that one i suggest just picking up a used tranny check craigslist

how much dose a tranny rebuild useally cost?? and no i think the first gear synchro is still good because i can get it in sometimes and sometimes not....how can i addjust the clutch? this may work...

If 1st and 2nd is giving you trouble and only going in every 1 out of 20 tries then it's a broken shift fork.

2nd is not giving me trouble its just first that gos in about 1unce out of a couple trys will it still be a shift fork problem?

Test it for sure.

Car on. Clutch out. In neutral.

Start to slide the shifter into first and slowly but steadily increase force towards first gear. Either your engine rpms will dip down a bit as you attempt to push it into first or it's gonna grind like a mofo and you'll know your syncro is bad.

If your rpms dip, it's a good syncro and there's something else wrong.

I am assuming it's syncros. I know how this feels. It feels pretty annoying (especially in your right hand)

ok my first gear syncrho is fine i drove it home today about 50 miles and only grinded 1st twice because i dident have the clutch down enough to switch gears LOL but now this is what i think is the problem first gear gos in once i put it in to 2nd then first and works like a charm gos in smooth if i have clutch all the way engaged and switch to first no grinding....so dose this mean i need my clutch to be adjusted or bled..or my clutch pedle need adjusting as well ....

ok my syncrhos are fine the 1st gear gos in all the time now only wont grab if i dont put the clutch pedel enough to the floor dose this mean i need a clutch adjustment or the clutch needs to be bled or the pedel its self needs adjusting?....please let me know thanks

How old is your clutch, could be the PP going bad or a bad adjustment or a leak in the hydrolics.

Just put some Gm synchromesh or something(pensoil) similar into your tranny and your problems will most likely be solved. I was having the same problem and I put this stuff in about 6000 miles ago and my tranny has been fine ever since!

Its worth trying to change the fluid, and if its never been changed, make that a first priority and certainly worth a shot, but to me it sound like a PP issue such as the clutch not fully disengaging.

THE ONLY WAY TO ADJUST THE CLUTCH PEDAL IS UNDER THE DASH. Jacks trans has a how to Jacks Transmissions LLC — Tech Articles. I am still going threw a similar problem and cant figure it out still. Its sounds to me like a bad syncro or the clutch just inst quit disengaging all the way. this could be due to bad clutch pedal assembly, leak in the system or just bad master or slave.

i just got the car and i was told it was the orginal transmission and clutch of the car im the 3rd owner of the car...i think its not the syncrho because i can put it in first gear no problem its just sometimes if i dont press hard enough on the clutch pedel and let go it will grind 1st like if its not grabing but then i do a quick 2nd to first with the clutch pressed all the way down and it grabs 1st gear fine with no grinding....this is the only gear giving me this problem im going to change the trnsmission fluid and see what happens from there because i dont think its ever bin changed....

blinky619-its bin doing this for a couple of months i belive.... the guy i bought the car off of told me this has bin going on for a lil while but it never gave him an issue because he showed me that first gear gos in with a quick 2nd to 1st...but i dont like doin this all the time so i would like to fix it..

Well then this changes everything. You originally said it did it everytime, no matter what, when you tried putting it in first. Do this...Pump the clutch 4 or 5 times then try to put it in first, if it starts going in well like that, then it's your master cylinder or possibly slave. If not, then we will rethink it.
