All 1g wheel and tire size questions from the newbie sections are merged here.

hi,
i am interested in putting 18" motegi MR-7 wheels on my 1991 plymouth laser. my only problem is i do not know if they will fit in the wheel well with tires. if anyone out there has 18" wheels on their laser....please let me know so and also tell me what size tire you have on the wheel. i would also like to know how snugly they fit in the wheel well. if 18's dont fit i guess i will have to go for 17 inch wheels. what is a good size tire that would fit a 17" wheel?

thanks in advance for any help you guys can give me

It won't hurt anything at all. The only thing different that will happen is what these guys said. My dad's been putting 15 inch snow tires on our minivan that normally has 16" for the past 9 years and no problems whatsoever. I don't see why you would want to do this though. It's not going to look any better because you'll have a bigger gap between the wheel and fender.

Its not a major difference, but with prolonged use, it will take effect on your whole suspention set up, being that the slight difference causes the set up that was configured one way to be off, causing less reliability in the long run... learnt this on my 93 talon, didnt take a chance on the 90 :)

Huh  What
Maybe you can explain this for us.

If you are going to buy these 15" rims, I would just wait. It's not really worth it. It won't make the car perform better unless they're performance tires. Save your dough and get some 17's or 18's.

how bad will it affect my talon if i put 15"s on it instead of the 16" the 15 are p205/60r15
(basically how far off will my spedo be once i put them on? will it be faster or slower and how much ruffley thanks)

205/60/16’s are very close to stock tire size. Your speedometer is not accurate enough to detect the difference. See for yourself.

Only if they are virally infected.

That depends on what kind of performance you are talking about. The lighter fifteen inch wheels will out accelerate similarly trod 16, 17’s, and 18’s.

True, but it won't out handle a larger wheel. The larger the wheel, the larger the contact patch. Plus, bigger wheels just look alot better on our cars.

Wrong again. The contact patches will be of nearly equal size assuming the same tire pressure. I happen to agree with your appearance opinion, but that wasn't the question.

well here's the thing about that....high profile tires (60 and above) are narrower than the same width tire of lower profile. tire manufacturers measure their tires at the widest point while inflated on the ground mounted on a car. large wisdewall tires bulge more, so they measure at teh bulge. low profile tires dont bulge, so their measurements are taken at the actual contact patch.

check this out. next time you see a f 250 or similar truck with stock tires... they are 265 75 16.5 or something close. (at least on early 90's ) models. compare that with a 265 35 18 performance tire. the actual contact patch is compeltely different.

And you can run a bigger profiled tire on a smaller rim......in theory, better traction.

If you were to have a really big profile tire on a small rim. I'm pretty sure the sidewall flex would be pretty bad. If you have a smaller profile on a big rim, you don't have nearly as much. And that would help you corner alot better.

It depends on how wide they are, I'd assume a 225/50 -16 would work, but I don't know what the backspacing is on those wheels. Hell they may not fit well at all.

there was a member on here that did that I while ago. The wheels are 8" wide and have a slightly different offset than our stock wheels. He used spacers but unfortunately I forgot the size he used it really looked good though on his 1g. Oh and since the wheels are 8" you can fit a 245 tire on there, I think the overall stock diameter of a wheel on a dsm is about 25" so go to tirerack and look under specs find the 245/xx/16 tire that has the closest overall diameter and you are good to go. Just for referance I am almost 100% posotive you will need to run a 245/45 tire on the wheel. I could be wrong though.

turns out my dad has a pair of 245 50 16 tires (camaro z28 LT1), they are shot but im going to mount one of the tires up on the vr4 wheels and see if they fit.

A bald set of 245/50's would be a good indicator as to whether the 245/45's will fit since the overall diameter will be a little closer without all the tread on them.

What size should I get for my 1G AWD OEM Rims? I have JIC's on there so I don't need to much sidewall (for those who like to cover up the gap a bit with bigger tires).

Im thinking 215/50/R16... what do you guys think? or should I go 55 or 45? I think 45 would be to low for a 16 inch tire...

I am planning on getting Azenis Sports as this car will be for Track days and Time Trials.

You have to remember that when you change your tire size, it changes your wheel+tire's Outer Diameter, and you will effect your spedometer, odometer and other things as well. I think that if you are running OE wheels, then you should stick to OE sizes on your tires. If you want to "Plus 1" your tire size, you should get new wheels and lower profile tires so that your outer diameter is still close to what the ECU expects to see.

I was just wondering what is the widest tire I should get on my 1g TSi AWD. I am keeping the 16" rims... but plan on moving to 16" Rota's with a 42mm offset. I was just woundering whats the widest I should get without them rubbing or sticking out.
