All 1g wheel and tire size questions from the newbie sections are merged here.

hi,
i am interested in putting 18" motegi MR-7 wheels on my 1991 plymouth laser. my only problem is i do not know if they will fit in the wheel well with tires. if anyone out there has 18" wheels on their laser....please let me know so and also tell me what size tire you have on the wheel. i would also like to know how snugly they fit in the wheel well. if 18's dont fit i guess i will have to go for 17 inch wheels. what is a good size tire that would fit a 17" wheel?

thanks in advance for any help you guys can give me

I recently ordered a set of rims with the specifications: 17X7 5-114.3 40S

I place I ordered them from stated that the two tire sizes below would fit my rim.

215/40-17
215/45-17

Should I go with the 215/45-17's or the 215/40-17's? What do you think?

What you need to do is look at the specs for the tires your planning to buy. Now find you stock size and look at what the diameter of thoses wheels are. Now when your looking for new plus sized tires you want to find the size that is closest to the origional diameter, as to not screw up your speedometer to much and your gearing.

Thanks wret and daren_p. Do you think 225's on a 17inch rim will rub the outer fender lip or in the wheel well?

for a long time i wanted to go low profile (ish) so from my 205/55/16s i put on one of the rims i got from my friend that had a 205/45/16 on it. turns out it makes the wheel gap look horrendous and the wheel/tire combo looks incredibly small. do you think i should go with it and lower the car later, or just stick with the 55's? i'm leaning towards the 55's not only because of the prospect of having more power here pretty soon, but mainly just in a cosmetic sense. any opinions would be appreciated. thanks!

Does anyone have some pics of some 225/55 or 50 tires on the stcok 16s. It doesnt matter which stock ones but just some stock 16" wheels. (16x6)

Wheel gap has nothing to do with tire size. You must always keep the circumference of the tire the same as OEM.

Wheel gap is reduced by lowering the car.

If you want low profile tires, you have to up the rim diameter... 16's to 17 and such. Just as AWDPetmitsu said 255/45/17 is a good size. The sidewall is smaller, yet still gives you some protection from potholes and such, unlike a 30 or 35 profile.

For example these size work well.

205/55/16
225/45/17
235/35/18

Don't buy a 205/50/16, the speedo will be way off for the drop in sidewall you will see.

I got 17's for my car now I'm searching for tires. Everywhere they recommend goin 225 all around, but I'd like to go a bit wider on the rears. I was thinkin 235 for rear and 225 for fronts. Just curious, will I be running into any issues with this on my AWD. I know i can't rotate and all that, but thats not my concern. Just wanted to know will I put the gat in jepordy of breaking something. Thanks

I have KYB AGX struts and Eibach pro springs. Just got them actually, and now I need to buy tires. I was thinkin to go 235/45 for rear and 225/45 for front.

No. You can't do that. if you want, try it, then replace the viscous coupler, and try it again.. .replace the visous coupler again, and after a couple thousand dollars worth of repairing driveline parts because you wanted to look cool with wider tires on the back, you put the CORRECT MATCHING tires on the car, and have a good day.

Take that 16 inches plus the height of the side wall of your tire, i run 18x8 momo sports on my vr4 with 205 series nitto 555 low profiles and its like 1/4 of an inch off OEM, just take the measurement of your OEM wheel and tire go to the wheel shop and say i need and rim and tire combo that will be as close to my factory height as i can. :thumb:

I punched in a couple sizes in that tire size calculator, and what I'm understanding is that no wheel/tire combo that I buy would be exactly to OEM size and would throw some measurements off a little, am I correct in assuming this?

General rule of thumb is to stay within 1% of stock diameter though 2 or 3% changes have been successfully used. It will be difficult and unecessary to match exactly though with AWD, all four corners must be the same.
