I have ran up on a 90 laser rs that has been sitting for a while and i went and looked at it, the problem that happened was a screw was dropped in the 14b that was on it and them not knowing bought a 13b for the car thinking it was the same thing, but here is my question would that cause the car to studder above 4k rpm? we got it to crank and it idles a little high but other than that the studder problem is the issue would the 13b cause that or should i just be looking for a boost leak or something else

I am gonna be getting a 14b if i get that car im just wondering if that could cause the issue or if i need to look deeper
 
The answer is no, a slightly smaller turbo isn't going to cause the car to cut out and not run right. IT just won't make the same power as the 14b, that's about the only difference. It could be bad gas, a boost leak, bad plugs or a number of other things.
 
Ok thank you for the Reply. I will look into the other things you listed. too get more into detail when you get it up too about 4000 rpms it starts spuddering kind of like fuel cut i will replace a few things on it and see if that helps. thank you
 
I wouldn't just start replacing things. You need to test things. Smell the fuel, if it smells bad than drain it out. Do a boost leak test on it, check the resistance in the plug wires. Remove the plugs and check each one for proper gap and proper spark.
 
Let me ask, does it have an aftermarket exhaust? If so, do u have an aftermarket boost gauge? Hook up the boost gauge and see what the turbo is REALLY boosting to. You very well could be hitting fuel cut. I was on a 13b in a 1ga with a 13b. I had my eprom chipped and that solved my problem. If you have an eprom, you could likely do the same.
 
im gonna go do a boost leak test tomorrow, the exhaust is cut off at the cat (someone stole it) and there is no aftermarket parts on the car. Also the plug wires are the wrong ones when it was sitting for a while a rat ate through the plug wires and the older gentleman stuck some other ones on it so he could crank the car
 
I would start with your exhaust. You need something to restrict the flow a little or your flowing out so fast your waste gate no longer acts as the path of least resistance. So you end up over boosting like crazy and hit fuel cut. As I said, I bought my talon with a 3" turbo back exhaust and a ported O2. Without adding boost at all via a MBC i was spiking up to about 25psi and would settle around 22psi. With a stock ECU you will hit fuel/boost cut real fast. Mine would feel like she hit a brick wall once boost was in full swing, abotu 2800RPM. Another issue I had was my BOV would start to open under that high of boost as the spring could not handle the pressure. I would suggest putting a boost gauge into the car and see what is really going on. Maybe also go to 1glink and pick up a datalogger system to get a much better idea of what is going on in your car. The two of those combined may set you back about 150bux, but well worth the investments.. Thats just my .02. With as many problems as you seem to have with the car tho, I would want to monitor things better and know where to start looking.
 
Replace spark plugs, its worth the ten bucks. Check your spark plug gap too!!! Thats what it sounds like..
check for any loose connections around the intake manifold. Go all the way around it and just check over your connections, like on the drivers side, the power transistor on my car used to come lose all the time, so i rtv-ed it in there...
Boost leak tester is a MUST in this dsm-game, and t-bolt clamps haha.
