Ok my old trans has a broken shift fork so, I picked up a used trans that had been rebuilt and then used for 5 months. Then pulled when car was totaled and has been setting for a year. After installing it I tried to roll the car and it will not move not even with the clutch pressed in. Could it be I just need to work it with some oil in it until it lossens up? Has anyone had this prob?

Also with the car on stands I can turn one wheel and the other will turn the opposite as it should. The TC is off the car so it can't be that. I can also shift it into all gears and still no movement.

If transfer case is off and car won't move with clutch in I can only think of two possibilities. Clutch isn't really in or this unit has a broken fork also and the car is in two gears at once. Difficult to say without teardown. What does it do if you try and start it?. If clutch is working it should at least start. It's what happens when you let clutch out even when in neutral that will be interesting. If it dies when you let clutch out in neutral there is something wrong inside tranny. Not likely you'll fix it without a teardown.

The clutch is working I can start the car but if i release the clutch the car stalls out. The trans was good when pulled is there any way one of the shift forks could be stuck from not having any oil in it for so long?

No. Work the levers at the transmission with no cables. Make sure it's actually in neutral. If it still does it you're in 2 gears at once or have foreign objects inside. I realize it was working, but it isn't now.
I can think of nothing else that would hold it.

As stated it is either in 2 gears at once because of a broken fork or something is jamming it on the inside. Time to pull it and see what is going on.

Ok found the problem, the shift rod for 3rd and 4th is sticking if shifted into one of those two gears. I had to pull the outer trans case and tap that rod back in to get the trans out of 3rd and 4th. Anyone know why it would be sticking? :banghead:

I am able to drive it in 1st,2nd,5th, and reverse.

It can't "stick". Likely a broken shift rod end. You can push it one direction but can't pull it back because it's likely broken.. You managed to push it back in by hand at the other end. The only solution is complete disassembly and replacement of the broken rail.

Ok that makes sense, thanks for the info.

Sounds like a broken shift rail end as stated, or possible the shift fork is cracked where the roll pin slides thru it casing it to be loose. Pull the case apart and check it out. I have some of these parts lying around if you find the problem pm me and i might be able to help you out.

This just happened to me tonight... I am in need of some help. Is there any way I can get the car to roll it is stuck at a buddy's house, and don't think I can even load it on a trailer.

I think this is what happened. I was messing around and did a hard 1 to 2 shift and it was like I missed it tried to put it back into gear, and it was grinding. So i let out the clutch and some how I was in 4th now it is doing this exact same thing.

I can start the car.
let out the clutch and it stalls.
I can kinda feel the gears in the stick but i hit a spot where there is no gears at all.

The biggest issue the car is not at my house, and I have to some how get it home.
Any Ideas? Thanks.

Well you may have to wait and pull it somewhere to work on it, kinda out of options, but your going to have to pull it out, and inspect everything and go from there, sucks ive been in that situation before, found out my throwout bearing had finally siezed up.

You have a 90 right? Did u replace it with a 91-94 tranny? If so you would definetely have problems finding gears as they use different shifter arms and shift cable mount bracket.

I had similar issue when I put a 90 tranny in my 94. if u have your old tranny u can tell by comparing the shifter arms. One is longer

If so you will need to either

A. Swap the whole shifter base and cables out of the 91-94
Or
B. Have a tranny shop switch the shifter arms off 90 trans onto the 91-94 and use the 91-94 shift cable brackets (that bolt to tranny)

If you have a super air hammer u can change the arms yourself,,,but even the tranny shop I took mine too had trouble doing it haha
