Pretty soon I will be doing a head swap and replacing the timing belt and all of it components. I will be swapping my 97 2g head to a 1g head (unsure of the year). I'm looking for opinions on what to do with the cams. I can either run the 2g cams in the 1g head, 1g cams in the 1g head or have 2g intake cam and 1g exhuast cam in the 1g head.

Basically, is it worth the extra work to drill and tap the 1g intake cam, or should I just use the 1g exhaust cam or stay with my 2g cams. I searched a little before I posted this and I have found many different replies. Most say to just use the 1g cams, but another sourced the NABR forums saying that its best to just use the exhaust cam from a 1g (which is what I am leaning towards). Thanks in advance

There's never been any dyno proof of any increase in hp from swapping 1G/2G cams...

Ask your self: what is tha duration and lift? go w/ the most of both for more power...

From what I've researched, the differences are negligible.

I have 2g cams in my 6bolt 1g right now and im not sure there is really any significant difference. Ive heard the 2g cams dont have as much lift but more duration oppose to the 1g cams, but its probably by such a small amount that who cares. I plan on upgrading to aftermarket cams anyways within the next year and perhaps you should also.

yea Im going to upgrade after this upcoming summer without a doubt, I just want to see how fast I can go on an all stock long block (depends if you count the arp headstuds :) ). Then I might look into a nice set of 264/272 's
Ill just use my 2g cams because they probably have half the mileage that the 1Gs probably have. Ive got about 70K on the clock. In fact the main reason for not buying upgraded cams is simply $, which most DSM'ers can relate to.

1G cams have more duration and less lift
2G cams have less duration and more lift
It is a wash... if there was a difference it would be so small it is not worth the energy to even think about it.

Hope you know what your doing...

Hmmmm which DSM head more closely resemmbles the intake port design on EVO Viii, IX's???

It sure isn't the 1G head....

I realize the 2g head is designed better, but I have a cyclone intake manifold that I will be installing next month and I need a 1g head to match the ports. Plus I suspect that my 2g head is warped.

If you want to go big chose the 1G head! Paired with a Cyclone manifold it's going to make quite a difference.
EVO I, II, and III made history before the EVO VIII, and IX in the WRC cup.
As for cams I would stick with the ones that look better (aren't worn out).

The 1g head is better stock for stock compared to the 2g head if your going for high rpm, or peak horsepower. If you port a 2g head it will be better than a 1g head ever will be though. The cyclone manifold and 1g head will feel nice on your car.

Original Poster,

Check which 1G cams they are. There are many different kinds. The most aggressive cams seem to be out of 93-94 DSM's with a manual transmission. You will find a letter stamped in the outer edge of the cam that will tell you it's revision. When I build my ported 2G head up, I searched for a good used set of 1G revision "C" and "D" cams. They have .010 more lift and 8 degrees more duration than my 2G cams did. Later, when I switched over to a 1G head, the cams went over with it. They worked very will with a mild port job and 1mm oversized valves. If you want to know more, check out this thread.

If you really want to know the specific lift difference, just hit both cams up with a micrometer. It should take the guesswork out of half of it. I mic'd up all of my cams when I had them apart, and just as it was written, the 1G cams have .010 more lift.

Oh, and don't drill and tap the 1G cams. Just use a 1G cam gear on the intake and you'll be all set. The 2G cam gear will work on the exhaust just fine. One will be a four star and one will be a five, but everything else lines up perfectly.

As far as whether or not it's worth it, every little bit helps.

Good luck,
Matt.
