1G gear ratios vs. 2G gear ratios? Are they different?

Hi!

I just swapped my transmission out and put in my TRE transmission.

The previous owner of the transmission built it with TRE internals For his 1G, then he got into an accident so he bought a 95 get shell and put his 6 bolt motor in it and picked up a blown 2G tranny to put his 1G TRE internals into.

I then bought this 95GST from him so I can grab all the good stuff, then swap out my tranny etc, then sell it.

What he did was have TRE machine his 1G tranny internals/gears to beable to adapt into the 2G transmission. Everything pretty much was interchangeable except for the differential.

He told me that 1-4 has double synchros and has hardened shift forks and brand new bearings.

I was wondering if the gear ratios were different between the 1G and 2G trannies.

Looks like the MT are the same and the AT are different. Hope that answers it!

Alright.. thanks so much for the reply.. I'm just tripping out because My rpms seem so low when I'm cruising at 60mph @ 5th gear....

What's the regular RPM at 60MPH 5th gear???

Is TRE really that hard to get a hold of? My first e-mail was never answered, I sent my second e-mail to them asking about WHAT IS REALLY INSIDE MY TRANNY, or ATLEAST what parts they sent out/machined for the dude I bought the tranny from! I HIGHLY DOUBT I HAVE 1, 3, 4 double synchros.. but I hope 2nd really has double synchros... the tranny I have is pretty smooth, but I'm afraid to go hard on it until I figure out what is really in it... Also, nobody seems to ever answer their calls there.

TRE are busy people, but they have a good rep.

BTW my GS turns about 2800rpm in 5th. I think my old 93 TSI turned about 3200rpm at 60 mph. (AWD)

Hey... I took a close look at my rpms this time.. at 5th gear 2,500 rpm's I'm already going around 63 MPH I hope I'm not just tripping out, but its seems lower than what it used to be with my stock tranny. This is FWD... Anybody else can share their 60MPH rpm @ 5th gear??

I'm AWD, but it is definately closer to 3,000 rpms if not a touch higher. I think you do a have a longer 5th gear.

Hey... I took a close look at my rpms this time.. at 5th gear 2,500 rpm's I'm already going around 63 MPH I hope I'm not just tripping out, but its seems lower than what it used to be with my stock tranny. This is FWD... Anybody else can share their 60MPH rpm @ 5th gear??

I definately wouldn't be tripping out about this. Sounds like you do have the longer 5th gear which is perfect for long road trips and you'll definately be getting better gas mileage, so be greatful

You guys have to remember different wheel sizes. 95 awd Im at 3k ish rpm at 60 mph

Oh, I've got 225/40/18 Tires/Wheels and I'm front wheel drive. I think AWD has a shorter 5th gear if i'm not mistaken. And, I've been doing a lot of searching, and found out that the TRE taller 5th is pretty noisy... My 5th is pretty quiet.

The AWD 5th gear (.666) is taller than the FWD 5th gear (.741), it is the final drive that makes the AWD 5th gear shorter (4.153 FWD & 4.929 AWD) (numerically smaller gears are taller). vfaq link

The 10% taller 5th gear is from some other mitsu and is helical cut and not very noisy. TRE also makes a 15% taller dog-cut 5th that would be noisy, I think that's what you're referring to.

also, your speedometer is reading .8% too slow (60.5mph @ 60 indicated), which is basically dead on. [shrug]

So, I guess I have the Stock 5th gear?? Or is there a possibility that I have the 10% taller one, since this is quiet...

Easiest way to tell about the 5th gear is just take the cover off and count the teeth, and see if its straight cut or helical.
