1g ECU question non-turbo

First off, I want to say that this is a great site. I'm a member of several gen3 sbc sites and this one is extremely helpful. I was able to find a lot of information before having to post.

I have a 1992 g1 non-turbo 2.0 5-speed that I use as a DD. I had a surging problem that I took care of last year, otherwise it's always been very reliable. Last month it would not start. It would crank, but not fire.

I was able to diagnosis and replace the power tr and primiary and secondary coils. However, it still wont start. I believe the problem is with the ECU. There seems to be some capacitor leakage as described here ---> http://www.tmo.com/howto/ecu1g/caps.htm I do not know anyone with a 1g non-turbo that I could swap ECUs with to test.

My question is - could it be anything other than the ECU? Is there something else I can do besides replace the capacitors? Do ECUs break that suddenly? I didnt have any ticking or other warning sign as described in the article I linked to. Any and all help would be appreciated.

If you're sure the coil is not giving out spark and you've changed the coil already, then it's probably the ECU. Your ECU probably has been leaking for a while now, it takes a while for the acid to eat throught the circuit board. Prior to this, did your car idle funny? My car surged to 7000rpm twice two days before it compltely died. Good luck.

i dont know if you have done this yet but....
pull out your ecu and pop off the top and look at the top side of the board if it is bad it will smell fishy and you will notice black shiz by the caps that right there should tell you if the ecu is bad thats what was wrong with mine payed 30 bucks at the junkyard threw it in and she fired right up (my ecu just went one day on the high way coming back from spring lake and i didnt here any clicking so good luck with it)

Thanks for the help. I'll check the ECU again, but i dont remember a smell. I know I have an ignition problem. I cant get a spark out of the coils. I did have a surging problem, which I fixed last year, but I didnt think it was related to the ECU.

I'm going to replace the caps tomorrow or the next day and I post up if it fixed my problem.
