My 1g TALON just had a clutch job done and I took it for a test drive and the temp was over red. I got the car back to the shop (it was only a short drive) and the block was reading 300 degrees in some places and it smelt like it was cooking. There was an airblock (we had changed some hoses) and we fixed that. I then took it out after the airblock was sorted and it still overheated.. However, when we checked the tem of the block it was normal operating temperature (like 195 F). I think a sensor has gone haywire, and it is running rough I think because of the ECU thinking the engine is so hot. What should/could I do and what do you think the problem is?

Maybe you should clarify if the temp sensor is always reading in the red or does it start off normal and then climb to the red after it's been running. A bad sensor CAN read max temp or min temp on the gauge (both will affect your timing and fuel) but it won't cause your car to overheat. So to clarify, is the gauge starting normal or starting maxed out?
 
The gague goes to overheat after the car has been running for a couple of mins. But, the car is not overheating.. there is nowhere on the vehicle over 200 F, which is why I think that it could be a sensor problem? When I get down to the shop on monday i'll check a couple of things mentioned and get back with more feedback with the problems. Thanks.
 
I am pretty sure that the issue is a ground.. When I start up its already on max and then it flickers, so I believe it to be simply an intermittent grounding. The cooking engine is caused by my trubo having (we think) vacume lines in their wrong homes... this caused the 14b to boost upto 22psi (enough to warm everything up pretty good). Thanks a lot for the feedback though.
 
Good to know you tracked down the faulty sensor. Hopefully you have a good idea of how to run your vac lines and hopefully the turbo didn't see any damage from the high boost. It may be worth checking for boost leaks after running 20+ psi unintentionally.
 
..ya, the temp sending unit has only one wire heading to the unit - it uses the ground to complete the circuit. Make sure that you're kinda clean under the T-stat housing for something could also be shorting out the connection wire to ground..
