Hey guys I have a built 1g 7-bolt bottom end, but I am interested in getting a 2g. I was wondering if it's possible to put my 1g bottom end in a 2g. I know plenty of people put 6 bolts in 2gs, but I dont know the difference between the 1g engines. Would this be the same process as putting a 6-bolt into a 2g? Any help would be appreciated. By the way, sorry if I posted this in the wrong section I'm still relatively new to the forum and I assumed since this is kind of a basic DSM question the newbie forum would be an acceptable place for it. Thanks again.

Yes, it generally will be the same process as putting in a 6-bolt.

You can eliminate a few of the "6-bolt swap" difficulties by using a 2G head (same head bolts as a 1G 7-bolt) and intake manifold (no reason to relocate MAP sensor). I'm not as familiar with the crankshaft position sensor (CPS, also - crank angle sensor), but 4G63 7-bolt oil pumps/front covers are interchangeable, meaning you can utilize one from a 2G and keep the CPS also, assuming the 1G 7-bolt casing does not have provisions for the CPS. Wiring the cam angle sensor and CPS for a 6-bolt is most of the "6-bolt swap" battle, so swapping a 7-bolt in should be fairly easy.

Ok thats good info to know, but if I do put a 2g head on my 1g, will the coolant and oil passages be the same?

You bet. The most obvious way of knowing is realizing that all 4G63 engines use the same head gasket.

Keeping the 2G head you will also be able to use the 2G thermostat housing and water pipe, eliminating yet another problem spot for the normal 6-bolt swap. Make sure you read over the 6-bolt process enough to get an idea of what it entails. Then understand what is different between a 6-bolt and 7-bolt and why you may or may not need to change certain things. Do those things and you will have the swap done in no time. Search first, but ask questions if you absolutely have to. Good luck!
