1999 mitsubishi eclipse ticking at 3,000 rpms

Ok so i bought a 99 Mitsubishi Eclipse gs not too long ago work on it for a while got it up and running and it did fine for the first few week then all pf a sudden it started ticking at 3,000 all the way up to 3,500 rpms and it quits after 3,500 rpms for sum reason and u cant really here it in 3rd,4th,5th gear and its comeing from the top of the engine. i cant find anything about it and i know u cant adjust the vavle on it so someone plz help !!!

Um...what??

This doesn't sound at all like idle surge. it sounds like a bad lifter/roller follower. OP, pull the valve cover and check the lifters/valvetrain.
